Title: Newbie questions...
Post by: snakedog on December 19, 2004, 10:05:12 PM
...doing my first SME install this week on an old HP Pavilion (300mhz Celeron, 128mb ram) and will be doing this one behind a router as server only.  I've been thru the manual and am wondering if I'll still have firewall and webserving to the outside world.  My thinking is to put it out in the router's DMZ.  Thanks.

DMZ is one option, you could also do port forwarding.

If you have it in server only mode, you will loose the firewall functionality of the SME server, so if it's in server mode i would suggest you just use port forwarding, and not to place it in the DMZ, but if you change it to server/gateway mode, then it will be fine as long as the external nic is the one in the DMZ.

if you do a search for IPCOP here someone talks about placing an SME in a DMZ, have a look.

hope that helps
