hello,
my sme 6.01 installation stopps the installation, don´t exactly know why ;(
are there any known problems with serial ata controllers?
motherboard: intel desktop d865perlk
hd: maxtor 80gb serial ata

YES - there is a (serious) sata problem.
Without a special bios compatibility feature (=slow).
OR a newer kernel (still under developement, search here) you will not be able to use SATA drives.
Sry to say but SME 6.01x isn't sata compatible.

very bad news :cry:
every time when i installed e-smith and sme on old machines i didnt had any problems, an now i ordered a very fast machine to have more fun with sme...
-the controller is the onboard controller. http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rl/

i tested the sata enhanced and legacy modes with no success. i think the best way is to buy a ide harddrive.
are there any recommandations?
what about the IBM IC35L080? are they still known as "deathstar" or do they work ok in server usage?

Unlucky again :-D
The harddisk division of IBM has been bought by HITACHI...
I am mostly buying HITACHI HDS722516VLAT80 (Capacity: 153.39 GB) (or even bigger) these days.
Longest in failure-free 24/7 Raid5 operation is ~100days now - I would buy again (actually will buy 2 in 01/05).

P.S.: Experience with "deathstar" here isn't really that bad.
A friend/client run's a 24HD Raid5 with radiological data (1.8TB) for ~2y without fail.
Personally I'm lucky in a nonprofit that I support where they are used heavily in video-stuff-operation - no prob's for 1y+. - SMART still says "everything running smooth"

ok. thanks. then i will buy tomorrow two of the cheap ibm disks and check the mirroring with sme. is it useful to buy exactly the same disks for the raid or can i change a crashed disk with onother type with the same partition size?

Just becaues I'm (sort of) lucky with the IBMs doesn't mean you have too be. - There are quite many reports that the (early) drives failed en masse and that their new firmware (moving the heads when idle for some extended time) doesn't always work...
Just don't come running to me for a 40euros crash :-D
The 160G Hitachis should be much safer... (NO reports)
I have to admit that I installed software Raid1 and Raid5 with different manufacturers harddisks. Since Linux Software Raid is partition-based it always worked...
Make sure however that those disk have about the same size (the smallest HD determines the "size of the pack"), that the speed is about the same "mostly the slowest HD determines the speed of the ... (you know what) and last but not least... get as big an "on board HD cache" as you can afford ...
In summary: better use identical spec'd HDs (personally I still have mixed feelings about mixed installations where I had to make compromises).
Why not buy another one of that (hopefully not hardware) "crashed disk" ???

P.S.: Don't be too cheap - time and data represent much more value than a cheap disk does!

or SAMSUNG SP1213N P80,120GB 7200, 8 MB Cache
are the cheapest disks with 8 mb cache.
the size is actually too big because its only a small office server (no downloads ;-) )
i think i check the 80gig samsung with only 2mb cache

bought two samsung 80 gig disks, and the software raid installation is running now ;)
i love sme!
does anyone have some usefule links for sme raid troubleshouting and changing broken disks?!
