Title: HDD spindown
Post by: stormdragon on January 06, 2005, 03:53:51 PM
I've got a noisy problem...

Well actually, it's not a problem, it's just annoying. I've acquired an old Fujitsu 20GB HDD which I've mounted and works great, but it's noisy as heck when it spins up!

Is there a utility that would allow me to tell the drive to spin down after x seconds?

thank you

Very little point on a server with the disk being accessed every 5 seconds, even when it's doing "nothing".
A noisy HDD just means trouble isn't far away. Get a new drive, they're very cheap.

Oh well...

Yeah, the drive *was* cheap: $0 :)

Not that it's making Click Of Death noises or anything; all Fujitsus (at least all the ones I've used) are noisy. Moreso than the newer fluid bearing drives like my main HDD.

I wouldn't risk it with an old Fujitsu drive ....

We had several 20gb Fujitsu drives fail completely a few years ago  - a well documented component failure on the drive itself. There was a lot in the press at the time, check the old stories here:

What made it worse was that we had just bought a load of Compaqs and then the merger with HP happened so warranty claims were a bit torturous ........
