Title: Upgrade to 6.01-01
Post by: ctaylor on January 07, 2005, 02:44:09 PM
I attempted to upgrade from 6.0 to 6.01-01 but when i created a floopy boot disk and attempted to upgrade i received error that the "kick start" file was missing.  Firstly I want to be sure that i obtained the correct version of 6.01-01 (as it appeared to be only on the main download page and not on any of the mirror sites).  It was also not corrupted while downloaded as the md5sum matched.

Note: When it came up with the error it simply halted the upgrade.

I really like to upgrade as I noticed a couple of funky things with 6.0 -- like for example under hostnames in SME server manager there is no "save" button when adding a new hostname (which i really want to do).

Thanks for the help.

You can make a boot floppy from the server manager, so you need not do that from the installer. However, I don't use floppy diskettes at all anymore. I set the machines to boot from CD and that has made a world of difference.

Also I have learned to use rsync to make a viable copy of the SME file system. That allows me to perform a clean install from CD and then restore the system using rsync. Being somewhat slow upstairs it took some effort to get my head around rsync. Once I understood how to use it, I can rebuild a machine in a very reasonable time.

Here are the steps I followed to upgrade:
- backed up the 6.0 machine, the entire file system, using rsync.
- upgraded to 6.0.1 from a CD. The CD was burned from the iso image and I booted the machine from the CD. I did not elect to make a boot floppy during the upgrade process.
- used Greg Swallows, et al, upgrade scripts to bring the system to the current state of things.

This worked like a charmed. No data was lost, and the machine is working well. The backup was not needed but if it was, restoring is easy using rsync.

hth,

6.0.1 ISO did not copy over the KS.CFG file when it create the floppy. I just rename the KS_xxxx.CFG file on the CD to KS.CFG and copy it into the floppy. that solve the problem. But it give me another error about the PHP along the installation. Even the latter one won't halt the installation. I round up use the Custom 6.0.1 ISO instead which give me no problem at all.
