Title: host aliases
Post by: dwater on January 17, 2005, 02:43:00 AM
Hi,

I am having printer problems using my SME server, so I would like to set up my clients to use a alias hostname that I can point to different hosts.

My clients are XP Pro. I would like to set them up to use, for example, \\printerserver\lj2200 and then be able to point 'printerserver' to whatever host happens to currently work using DNS.

For example, my laptop (OS X) advertised printers fine, and so I want to point 'printerserver' to 'dhekelia' (my laptop's hostname), and have it serve printing requests.

Is this even possible?

I see in the server-manager that we can add hostnames for the SME server itself, but I don't see how to add hostnames for other hosts.

Can someone advise?

Thanks.

Max.

First look at the Hostnames and addresses section of the SME Manual http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/bobk/SME_Manual/chpt-13.5.html#13.5.1

If this does not help then come back here.

Didn't help.

I'm not even sure how I would have done what I want to do using dnsmasq...

I just want to make a hostname 'printerserver' that I could set to 'point to' any other hostname (whose IP address is assigned using DHCP).

Perhaps that isn't possible. I suppose I can do it using the MAC address, but that is, er, awkward.
