I can no longer access my server.
System starts, login prompt displays, accepts user name, accepts password, flashes message " ... connection for user, admin closed" and returns to login prompt.
Is anyone aware of a work-around for this problem? I have some important information on this computer that I'd like to recover. :-o
Thanks for reading this post

I think there's a chance your server has been compromised. It's an old, unmaintained release, after all.
I'd suggest that you get a linux rescue/recovery CD and boot that and start looking around. You should also contact security@contribs.org.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm running the old release because I was unable to upgrade the server due to more stringent hardware requirements of the newer releases. I have since installed SME version 6 on a Dell Poweredge server and it works well.
I did back up the data from the SME 5.6 server so I'm not in a panic. However, I'd like to figure out what went wrong in order to avoid this problem in the future.
I'm curious about what you mean by "compromised". I was trying to set up remote administration using telnet some time before my login problem arose. Could this have "compromised" my server?
I also tried to restart the server using the boot disk that was created at the time of installation of the server, but still was unable to log into the server. I'll look at this further.
I'll also contact security@contribs.org as you suggested.
Thanks again
