Hi all,
I'm sorry, I do not know how to call the following. But I'll try to explain as well as I can.
At my university, whenever I connect to the network, I get a popup asking my for my student ID and password. It then allows my IP to access certain network priviledges, Internet, intranet, etc...
What is this called and can it be done with SME ? Lan AND/OR WiFi ?
Thanks

do a search on LANLORD, it maybe what you are looking at trying to achieve

hi thanks for the reply.
I took a look at it. And all I can see is that its a Server panel plugin that lets you see your current leases. Am I missing something?
Thanks

What I'm trying to find is something that would allow clients to connect to my lan, get an IP address from my server and not be able to use common protocol ports (ie: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, MSN, POP, SMTP,VPN, etc.)
As soon as they open a web browser, they are directed to a login page or prompt that requires to enter a UID/PASS. As soon as they are authenticated, rules on the firewall are changed to allow their IP to connect to the Net with a timeout value (~60 min).

There are a number of contribs that will allow you to use authentication for net access.
Take a look at:

does it work with 6.0+ ?

What you are after is a "captive portal" and there is no implementation of this for SME server.

Here is one called NoCatAuth:

This also look cool, as an alternative to installing it on SME:
