SAMBA VS FTP: I am testing e-smith on a two node network and the other night I was copying files between Win98se and e-smith. I used the Windows Explorer to copy the files to the server and had no problems but when I tried to copy the files back using Explorer it would copy a couple files and then give me an error about the files not being accessible. It seemed to choke on 500KB or larger files. However, when I fired up my GUI FTP software (as opposed to using the text based FTP included with Win98) I had no trouble at all copying the files back to my Windows machine. Is this a Samba problem or can you determine anything without having more detailed information? If this is a known issue will it be different in v3.0? I want to use e-smith as a file server as well as email and internet access if possible so this is an important issue to me - Windows programs need to be able to work on data files residing on the server. Also, we are interested in putting a couple Linux servers on the network - can I use e-smith for both, disabling email and internet access on one of them or would I be better off just using stock Red Hat 6.0? Thanks for the help. By the way, I am eagerly waiting for the 3.0 release - I hope we don't overload your FTP server when your release it.

SAMBA vs. FTP: Hi Steve! This is the first report we've had about this problem - it's very strange. It sounds like a bug in SAMBA to us. Version 3.0 has the new version of SAMBA on it, and we recommend trying it . Good luck. Kim

Whether you use e-smith or RH6 you will still have the problem of co-ordinating account information between the machines. It depends
on what services you want to run on the linux servers what you need to do and how it is best done. e-smith is really designed to be
the only server on a network - the client machines can happily be windows or Macs or even linux workstations. Seek expert advice ...
