Title: SATA - only supported on 2.6 kernels ?
Post by: richW on February 12, 2005, 12:04:03 AM
I found a ata_piix-0.93c-1b.tar.gz file on the support disc that came with the Dell PowerEdge SC420 but it is only listed under RedHat 3.0 - maybe 2.0 supports is without this needed update -
Is the ata-piix SATA module only builtin to the 2.6 kernels of which 6.5 beta2 is only a 2.4....?
Is there a way to get a boot prompt on the start of the SME install where I can say # Linux Expert - and get prompted for module add-ins -  or am I way off - I'm still new with Linux installs --

No. SATA works well under very new 2.4 kernel versions (2.4.27+)

http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html

6.5ß uses
-kernel-2.4.20-18.7.i386.rpm

unless your Motherboard supplies compatibility mode you are out of luck - yet.
Please follow the 6.5ß dicussion where ShadLords says:

Unless the stock RH kernel supports SATA then no we don't support that yet.
When we move to RHEL4/CentOS4 then the support should be there.
