Title: New HDD; backup/Restore
Post by: igor on February 25, 2005, 12:35:46 AM
Hi All;
I'm French (sorry  ;)
but nobody answer to my question in the French forum; so I put it here.

I need to change my 2 HDD (raid1 software) because they are too small now.

I think to install a new sme-server on the 2 new hdd and restore the backup.

I just need a confirmation about that :

Is that realy ALL that I need to to...
- Backing-up the actual server thru web interface on a 'remote' desktop.
- Installing new HDD.
- Installing SME server on them.
- Restoring from web interface.

This seems for me too easy to do !!!!!!!!

Like this procedure; I don't need to do anything else for restoring, server parameters/users and groups data and parameters....

All my server will be completely functionnal after this so easy manipulation ??????

Help please.

Regards.

Igor

not a good idea: If his old HD are to small he will not even be able to backup (and restore!) to desktop for this ugly 2 GB limit.

My old HD were 20Gb.
News are 40Gb.
Do you think there is a problem ???

Backup is on a remote XP/ntfs station (thru web interface); so no size problem !

Can you tell me more about the 2Gb limit problem ????

Thanks.

Hi, igor,

the backuptodesktop webpanel in SME is not able to restore files with more than 2 GB. It backs up. Restore impossible (in my case 2.7 gb backup with mozilla did NOT restore from winxp NTFS partition).

This has been reported many times here. Do a search. You can use the wonderful backup2ws contrib by darrel may. But that needs some customization what to back up.

You said :
"Not able to restore file from 2gb...."

But..  2gb each ?  or the total backup must not exceed 2gb ?????

Does this "so simple" solution also take care of rebuilding the raid ?

Yes. But it is a little tricky, what to back up and restore - as stated before. This one is perfect for "normal" backups. I use it to back the whole /home and some files in /var .
