Title: DNS Help
Post by: dswillia on March 02, 2005, 07:11:44 AM
I have SME version 6.5 currently running in a lab environment, all seems to be working good except I have one problem.  For some reason  cannot goto www.calsnet.net, I can get to it without a problem if I go around sme.  I get the following error:

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.calsnet.net/

The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for www.calsnet.net
The dnsserver returned:

The DNS reply message is corrupt or could not be safely parsed.
This means that:

The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.

What is strange is that I can ping the domain from SME console and it DOES resolve correctly.  Any ideas?

Regards

I've had the situation in the recent past that when using SME DHCP I stil had to manually set the DNS servers on the Win clients (to SME or an external DNS server). Can you try one machine ?

same problem, even with static dns servers.  I tried editing the resolv.conf to no avail.  I also tried creating a file for tinydns that was titled "calsnet.net" with the ip address of 207.202.158.90 inside it.  When doing it this way, the connection will "timeout" before giving me the error.
