You might want to consider making this sticky for a little while

Sorry, I don't know how to make it sticky.

Also, most of the time I can be found on IRC on freenode at #guilinux

Yes I have joined the mail listing and am poinioningly (is that a word?) placed and waiting with baited breathe to see what the list produces.  :-D

To use a phrase used in advertising here in Aussie land "I'm excited"

When do we the users/members get a say. I thought thats what HF & others was trying to get started. A system were we all are involved and we all have a say and no one person controls us or the distro. A team made up of  professional members users and developers all having there rols and completeing it as a team.

Nothing about the process was hidden.. links to the discussions on the mailing list were posted before and after ruffdogs came into the picture. The thread on the mailing list included an invite to discuss the social contract for those that were interested. And after the social contract was posted the invite for people to get involved was extended once again.

Please allow me to look at those links as the links i have seen took me to the list and i followed the conversation but that was not publicly placed in the Contribs forums for all to see and comment prior to them taking over. The anouncement came to contribs after you and a couple of others had your say on the list. No question was ever asked direct to the community at large.  They seem to have been just told its done deal.

I'm sorry you feel that the mailing list and the links put on the forum to it were not public enough. The archives to that list were and are publicly available, and anyone can join it. I wasn't on the list and usually just cruised the forums. that was until I saw one of those links and felt it was important enough for me to join the conversation and get invovled.

This is true.. But the way things were at the time with RSI it's  not like anyone had a choice in the matter, contribs.org belonged to RSI. At the same time many were not to thrilled with the way things were. I also didn't see many people defending the status quo. people just seemed to be wanting change. RSI obliged everyone and handed it over to ruffdogs which was RSI's right no matter what the rest of us may like.

All I did was throw my support behind it because it was change.. movement of some kind that appeared to be going in the direction of getting things organized and clarified. My opinion on the matter was and is, what's the worse that can happen? Things stagnate, implode, fracture or some kind of combination of the 3. It seems we were heading down that road anyway so why not give them a chance.

From what I have seen so far it appears to have been a good idea. Evidenced by the first thing they did which was the social contract.. They are also currently working with their legal counsel as well as contacting both the OSDL and new Software Freedom Law Center to work on how to best protect the communities collective wroks here at contribs.org. That signals to me that they are serious.. But that is just my opinion.

I hope none of this has come across in a nasty tone because that has not been my intent.

This is a stupid question, but whatever happened to Lycors.  I thought they were going to do something.

BTW, a social contract is a great idea.  Look toward those great people at Debian for guidance!!!!

So does this mean that SME Server will remain free and supported by the contribs.org community?

If so, that sounds good, I'm reinstalling my SME Server, I did try the 6.5 beta 1 and the improvements looked good, although I did have a few probems with the mail retrieval contribs, so for now I'm going to reinstall the server with 6.0.1.

Good work so far, before I discovered SME server I was going to install NT Server 4.0 on my network.  My SME server has been happily running for a year with no major problems, the only reason I'm reinstalling it is for a spring clean, hardware upgrade and a bigger hard drive.

Positive change for the community?  :-?

What has changed?

The last news article on the front page is dated 05/03/2005 (Aussie Date) and we are now nearing 2 months since this last update.

The developers themselves are doing a great job and I commend them for there efforts, but this website (read community), apart from the forums has become stagnent.

Ruffdogs was championing this process, but where is the champion now?

It is all happening. Many people are making the changes required to move forward. Ruffdog - contrib mailing list indecates things are moving fast now. Couple more weeks and i am sure they will have it all working as it should. Good effort from all involved.
