Title: Transparent Proxy Dansguardian and AVG
Post by: wasserja on March 11, 2005, 10:34:08 PM
Has anyone had any trouble using transparent proxy through DansGuardian doing AVG updates?  Regular web browser traffic gets redirected through port 8080 just fine, but AVG (and some other programs) seem to not be redirected.  It still attempts to access it through port 80.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks.

You obviously haven't read the AVG docs!  In the AVG control centre, highlight Update Manager & hit the Settings button at the bottom right. You can set the proxy server details there.

Obviously....

I'm trying to use transparent proxy so I'm not having to tell hundreds of people how to setup their applications to go through port 8080.  Any other suggestions.

I've done that before, but it hasn't helped.  Nothing is even logged in the Dansguardian access.log file for grisoft.com or grisoft.cz or anthing being BANNED.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks.

What about adding this instead to /etc/dansguardian/exceptionsitelist

guru.grisoft.com

I've already added grisoft.com.  That should cover guru.grisoft.com, right?

I'm running ethereal on the windows box and it sees it getting the ctf file from guru.grisoft.com, yet all AVG says is Receiving Answer, but never does anything.

SME 6.0.1
Dansguardian 2.8.0.3
TransparentPort 8080

The problem is not merely with AVG.  The problem also occurs for multimedia files over port 80.  It seems that somehow Dansguardian or Squid aren't passing along the necessary information.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

I know this post is old but I'm having the same issue and was wondering if a fix was ever found.

For us it was a problem with the DG version.  We were running 2.8.0.3 at the time ad then we upgraded to 2.8.0.4.  That fixed it.  The problem was with other user agets.  I even think it's posted in the DG changelog.

#you can check your DG logs to see what site is being blocked
cat /var/log/dansguardian/access.log

#Follow RayMitchell's advice and put:
downloadfree.grisoft.com
#in the exceptionurllist file (/etc/dansguardian).

The issue was the version of Dan's I upgraded and all is well.

I had all the suggested AVG sites white listed but that didn't work.  The logs did not show that anything was being blocked, I even added the PC to the "allow or unfiltered group".  I can't expain but I do know that the upgraded version works fine even with all the AVG white listed sites removed.

Thanks for everyones help.
