When I attempt to get a Windows 98SE machine to do a VPN loging to my SME6.x server, I always get an error 645 which Microsoft reports as "Internal authentication error." The connection is using the standard Dialup Adapter and VPN adapter supplied by Microsoft. The error happens fairly quickly after launching the VPN connection. I see the dialog trying to authenticate then error 645. I get a different error number if I use a wrong uname/password, 649 "The account does not have Remote Access permission" which makes sense. This is a standard install with no addons.
I see an available upgrade contribution for Open VPN but I don't know if this would help or not. I'd like to know the advantages to OpenVPN vs what comes standard regarding VPN.
I failed to turn up anything when searching for this topic.
Sounds like a protocol error to me. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

I know nothing about this patch. It must be a Windows patch and nothing to do with SME, correct?
I'll see what I can find.

Bob,
I just downloaded the file and sent it to my work address to be installed tomorrow. I'll report back tomorrow and let you know if this is the fix or not but I'll bet it works.
I did a lot of reading about this patch on the MS site. There also was a 1.3 dun update prior to this one.
Thanks,

Bob,
The DUN 1.4 upgrade to the Windows 98 Dial up networking allows VPN access to our SME server. The DUN has to have the correct security boxes checked from the properties dialog.
Thanks a bunch,

Dan,
Just be advised that your vpn connection is not always reliable. Sometimes you can connect, other times, it won't let you. If you search the forums, you will find a long list of cases with trouble trying to connect.
I use it between som of the servers with out problems, others give me fits. It will work one day but then not the next.
I am planning to migrate to openvpn.
