Title: New Install - 6.5 or 7 alpha
Post by: laurie_lewis on March 17, 2005, 09:39:55 AM
I have been using 6.01 for a little while now for a home server and it does most things I want but I am about to rebuild a server and start from scratch again.....So

What do I install 6.5RC1  or   Mitel 7 alpha

I am going to run my server on a mini itx computer with up to 8 hard drives. My intention was to run hda & hdb as a raid 0 setup (software - 200 gig drives need backup as has valuable data being changed all the time) and then hdc & hdd as drives containing all my videos/music etc.  I then wanted to add at a later stage hde/f/g/h with either a SATA card or another PATA card.

My other question is can I connect a USB - ADSL modem up to either system and have it recognised as the appropriate network connection for sharing as it does for a network card during setup ?????

The server will not be accessible from the internet and is for local use only.  Will be used to obviously share files - share printers (USB connections) - mail server (spam filtering) - virus protection - music/video server (twonkyvision) and internet content filtering.

Comments appreciated.

That depends on what you want to test. Both releases are test releases, and only exist so that you can try them and report any malfunctions you find.

The only two supported configurations are a single drive, or a two drive RAID1 mirrored pair.

No. Nobody has developed support for USB DSL modems (AFAIK).

Thanks. It's still true that neither 6.5rc1 nor 7.0alpha has any support for USB DSL. Last I researched it various parts of the Speedtouch software weren't redistributable, so the base distribution can't legally support them. If that's still the case, complain to Alcatel.

Hi Charlie,

Sorry I made a typo - I meant RAID1.

I have got a 3 hard drives on my current setup, system on one and two others each one running as an i-bay.  I am using the How to by Michiel Blotwijk (http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/mblotwijk/HowToGuides/AddExtraHardDisk.htm ) As you are probably aware it uses symbolic links (new to linux so hope I have got that right)to achieve this.  Must be simple if I can follow the directions and get it to work.

To be honest I have not looked to see if SME supports additional drives through a PATA card but imagine it would.  I have seen some threads about SATA being supported so I imagine that a SATA card would work - thinking that 7 alpha more likely to have that support - then you would just have to edit the config files to add the extra devices ???

I suppose the bottom line is which will be the easier upgrade path for the future?

Thanks for the work you are doing I will just continue to tinker in the background and learn while you experts get it going.
