Title: backup to windows machine
Post by: harkete on March 22, 2005, 01:50:14 PM
Hi everybody,

I kindly ask for some advice on the following problem:

I have a SME box with 6.01 on. I currently use a hardware raid on it, but urgently feel the need to make backups anyway (my other HW-RAID 0+1 crashed the other day - destroying the data  :-x ). As the SME box is my only Linux computer, I would like to make the backup over the network to a Windows Box. What I tried was to rsync to a mounted windows share. But due to filename syntax differences between Linux and Windows (eg webmail files have a colon ":" etc), rsync does not seem to work.

Do anyone in this forum have a tip on how to perform such a task in a straightforward (repeatable) manner?  I have ca 5 GB of data on my server. (Using the "backup-to-desktop" seems to be no solution as it has to be started manually and also does not allow incremential/differential backups)

Very grateful for your help
/Erik

Hi,
I use Darrell May's Backup2 workstation contrib and it works great. Do a search on the forum to find out where it canbe downloaded.
Cheers,

Hi,

fantastic! I've just installed it - and it works without any troubles at all.

Thanks again
