Title: SME software raid questions
Post by: mrjhb3 on March 27, 2005, 03:54:16 AM
Anyone got any good tips on the best way to break the raid 1 software mirror on SME 6.x, or migrate from a single disk install to a raid 1?  I have been playing around with this just to test some different scenarios.  I have been able to recover from a raid 1 disk failure, but I have been unable to break the mirror successfully, nor have I been able to go from a single disk install to a raid 1.  I have read many pages on how this should work, but can't make it happen.  Maybe the best answer to the first question is to run in degraded mode until you can get another disk installed, and for the second to have a good backup, re-install via raid-1 and restore data.

Thanks,

JB

As far as I know they are the most appropriate methods.

...and how have you been able to recover from a raid 1 disk failure?
I have set my system from start using raid, but didn't think of that!

Search !

They are still applicable to 6.x except look for the more recent rpm in dmay 6.x contribs.

I wrote a howto that I am testing for this, located at: http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/jbennett/howto/Recoving%20From%20Raid%201%20Failure.htm

I didn't find Darrel's old howto, so I'll probably try to combine what I like best from both and use that.  I do like the raidmonitor, though.  I was trying to get mdadm to work and was having some issues.

That's the beauty of Darrell's contrib, it has the raidmonitor which emails you when a raid disk has failed.
