Title: 1 domain across WAN
Post by: tariqf on March 31, 2005, 11:30:01 AM
Hi can anyone tell me how to have a single domain across my WAN and have the users logon to their local server?

I intend to have 2 sme boxes liked by VPN over ADSL. Obviously the link is too small for roaming profiles etc.

Do I simply have each sme box set to serve up the same domain name?

How about in the Hostnames panel of one server, change the www hostname for your primary domain to point to the other servers (Remote) IP/location.
ie each server runs independently, but www is served only from 1 server.

Hi I think you misunderstand my question. I would like 1 domain so I can centrally manage my users. I have 2 sme boxes in 2 offices though so how do I achieve 1 domain across both sites?

I think you need to elaborate your requirements

This is what I interpret

2 PDC (1 for each site where users logon & authentciate locally)
2 file & print servers
2 gateways
1 web server

2 * PDC where users authenticate locally
2 * gateways
2 * file & print servers
2 * web servers
1 * Domain name
1 * LDAP directory

So how do you propose that the 2 web servers use the 1 domain name. If I enter a URL in my browser which server gets the request ?

You could have 1 web server that is accessed by both locations or anyone else on the Internet, what's the purpose of the second one ?

I think you may need to make one server the email server for both locations. sme server can do that, just use the delegate mail server setting in the email panel.

thanks ray you are correct I will only actually need 1 mail server for the external domain which I will set my DNS records to point to just one of my two SME boxes for this. The intranet site will be replicated between sites and so each site will use their local server for this.

I think my main purpose of this thread is to have a central user and group management. I will have my mail server on one site.
