RedHat obviously think that mysql 3.23.58 is sufficiently up to date, because that is what they ship with RedHat Enterprise Linux 3, which is what is the basis for this release. Moreover, mysql is only used for webmail preferences in the base release, and the shipped mysql is certainly "sufficiently up to date" for that.

If you wish to install additional software, maybe, just maybe, that software will require mysql 4 - in which case, you can install mysql 4.

The policy is that packages are only updated beyond that provided by the upstream vendor if there is a compelling reason to do so. In this case, there isn't.

To follow up on Charlie's point,
SME 7.0alpha5 on one of my test boxes, DID upgrade fine from SME 7.0alpha4.

Upgrade took between 7 and 9 minutes on a Intel  based P2@333mhz, with 192mg ram.

It is an excellent time to be an SME community member, we have 2 great works-in-progress; SME6.5 & SME7.0! {*grins large and long*}

I'd be very surprised if it did. You will want mysql 4 RPMs compatible with RHEL3 (or WBEL or CentOS 3), not with RedHat 7.3, as the ones which work with 6.5 will be.

Are you quite sure that you *need* mysql 4?
Title: Mysql 4
Post by: Skydiver on April 05, 2005, 07:01:28 AM
Charlie

Yes the application i am using links to Mysql and one section requires a feature that comes with Mysql 4 + only....
______________________________________________

On a different note
I not sure if this is a bug but i find

In server only mode SME 7.0 alpha3  all ports are closed even ports 80 110 25 and 21 even if ssh is enabled for remote access. I note i can access these ports from the local network but if i port forward to them from my router they are noted from the internet as closed.

Example

Primary ibay

If i do say 192.168.1.5 from the local network i see the primary ibay
If i port forward say 3001 to port 80 from my router and scan from the internet it says port closed.
If i try and access from the internet http://mydomain.com:3001 it should take me to this servers primary ibay but it refuses to connect.

Is this a bug or am i doing something wrong.

Note when i complete the above example on a SME 6.5 box in server only mode the example works from the internet and the ports scans as open.

Any help please

Hi
Thanks im downloading the iso now...

-----------------------------------------

CharlieBrady

Thanks for offering myself direction to the correct location for bug tracking. I was not sure it was a bug as i could not find a thread in the main forum system with details anyone else had found the same issue.
I thought before a bug is a bug the issue was discussed in these forums. Then posted as a bug to save posting none bug issues wasting developers time. In most cases i find its something i have done wrong and as a general rule someone here sets me right. User
error is normal for myself.
Anyway i will keep an eye on the bug section before i post here also.

Cheers

Ps any chance you have decided to update mysql to 4.* ???
hehehehe

It's a much greater waste of developer time to scour through forums looking for bugs which haven't been reported in the proper place.

As has been said here many times, report anything which doesn't "just work" to the bug tracker. Especially so for alpha and beta releases. You just waste everyone's time with "is it a bug or not" discussion. There's also a significant change that you'll be misled by mistaken answers in the forums.

My goodness you keep a close watch on things!

New version might take a while to percolate out to the
various mirrors.

I've included support for download using a zsync client.
zsync works like rsync, but puts much less load on the
server. More info on zsync here:

http://zsync.moria.org.uk/

I've added linux zsync RPMs in the devel/RPMS directory.

Quote

Please test and report any issues.

New version is the first one built using the RHEL/CentOS installer. That should improve hardware detection and compatibility.

It's a very minimal modification of the CentOS version, so
there are bound to be some rough edges.

Autodetection of upgradable systems isn't there yet - you'll
need to choose "install" or "upgrade" from the boot prompt.
Don't run this on a production server, and don't type in the
wrong string!

This version features an experimental feature for single disk
installs - it sets up the partitions as RAID1 (but with one
disk per set). That should make it easier for someone to work
out how to migrate from a single disk install to two disk
install. Shad Lords' already had a little look at the problem.

Thanks to some great testing and research from Roger Buck
there's a new netatalk package and configuration (which can't
work any worse than the last one!).

I've substantially reworked mysql initialisation/backup/restore. Instead of over 700 lines of
perl, there's less than 20 lines of shell script (although
some of the perl does remain in a few templated files). I've
also fixed/worked around the problems with supervising mysql.

Many of the reported bugs in earlier versions have been
fixed, and I've rolled in work Gordon Rowell has been doing
on the email configuration panel.

Upgrades from 6.x might now work. Please, please don't test
on a production server.

bash-2.05a$ md5sum smeserver.iso

So my version does not match either.

Please everybody, don't report any more cosmetic bugs to do with the installer. "alpha" means incomplete. The installer work is just prototype. I know it's rough - you don't need to tell me that. It's intended to get the job done, and no more.

If installation or upgrade fails, I want to know that. Or if the software doesn't work correctly after installation, I want to know that as well. But I'm not concerned about how it looks at present.

Most previously reported bugs have also been fixed.

Please test on non-production equipment, and report any problems to the bug tracker at http://smeserver.sourceforge.net/.

PPTP VPN should be working in this version. Please also test upgrades and restore from backup (but not with any data that matters).

Before I start to spend time on porting the Spamfilter and Antivirus panels it would be nice to know whether this is already planned by Mitel or the SME7 team.

Also, I might be blind but I cannot see anywhere what the purpose of SME7 is? Does Mitel plan to bring e-smith.org unsupported developers release back online???

Love the CentOS approach as I am using this in all my servers at work.

All in all great if I get access to the final release :-)

Gordon Rowell, Shad Lords and I have already done a significant amount of work in integrating virus scanning and spam filtering. I'd suggest you have a look at the change summaries "wellsi"'s put together, and do a test install of one of the alphas. It'd also be a good idea to join the developers mailing list at sourceforge.

Charlie, maybe a little guidance as to what sort of enhancement of the spam/antivirus features you'd like to see would be good.  Have you seen Jespers SPAM/Antivirus Panels for SME6.x?
http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_22.htm
http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_29.htm

They allow much more customization of options (RBL lists, spam filter level control, etc) via the server-manager than what is in 7.0a7 (have not got to 8 or 9 yet).  I would have thought you would have asked if he would like to contribute to SME7 already.  I for one would love to see all the options in Jespers panels included in SME7.

Hi there,

I’ve started testing this version in VM-Ware as I don’t have a spare server.

Installing and running Alpha_3 is ok, but the new Alpha_9 is strange – It ask for language like the old RedHat 7.x and after that it asks if I want to install Personal Desktop – Workstation – Server or Custom.

Obviously I use Server, then disk-druid appears?

Running autopartition and ok, then it asks for IP on nic…

Ending up with error see http://www.hegnstoften.net/sme7_alpha_9_error.gif

Any suggestions!

I would hope we can find a way to include folks like Jesper in this process. I know its not fair to speak for the community, but Jesper's SA and Clam contribs are one of the best features of SME that I rely on. It's simple, easy to use, and does what it says on the tin so to speak.

I'm not putting down anyone's efforts here, but I value Jespers work and hope some effort can be made to include him in ramping his work up to 7.

I would have thouth that Charlie's answer was sufficient - "Everyone is welcome to contribute".  A little discussion of any potential contributions (on the sf mailing list) would be appropriate perhaps before submitting rpms, but I'm sure enhancing the SPAM/Antivirus settings in the server manager would be a welcome addition to the SME7 distribution.

Agreed. It just seemed that if someone like Jesper wasn't aware that help was welcome, then maybe other contrib authors might be in the same boat?

I'm just a big fan of not re-inventing the wheel, but I'll temper that comment by saying I haven't seen v7 yet and I'm very appreciative of the hard work Charlie and Shad are putting into the release. ;)

You better all download and install 7.0alpha9 as it does contain significant changes & enhancements to email including qpsmtp & virus scanning (with basic on/off selection), spam filtering (with sensitivity, tagging, junkmail filtering & rejection level settings) and executable content message rejection (virus infected message rejection) all in a nice server manger panel.

Not the identical feature set of Jespers/Damians av panel but a worthwhile start, maybe it could be enhanced, probably the ability to remove quarantined & problem messages would be good.

I have installed 7.0alpha9 on an old box, a PII 233MHz with 90MB RAM & 3.2Gb HDD, which is sufficient for testing, if not a speed demon.

Look out for a bug that stops it rebooting the first time (until you apply the bug fix listed at sourceforge)

The following does not work as obviously things have changed.

Title: SME Server 7.0 release status (see thread in SME 7.x forum)
Post by: Robert on May 08, 2005, 03:31:28 PM
I haven't had a chance to install yet, but I noticed two minor things about the downloadable files. First, the format for the md5sum has been changed from "checksum filename" to "checksum ../filename". I believe the first format is more common and slightly more convenient. Second, there are no .zsync files for the more recent isos. I've uploaded a .zsync for alpha10 to http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rvandenaker/testing/ for anyone interested.
I hope to have actually useful comments when I get around to installing the iso.

Hey yall,
sorry to be Dr Doom-n-Gloom, again! My md5 did not match for SME7alpha10. Could someone else varify if there is an issue with the iso.
Thanks

Hi,

Please test the SME Server 7.0 alpha 12 release any way you can. The devs would really appreciate your feedback.

If you do experience _any_ issue(s), please log them into the bugtracker right here: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=96750&atid=615772

The more people test, the more stable a beta will grow.

Get the ISO from any of the morrors listed here: http://smeserver.sourceforge.net/sme70/Downloads?v=ewe

Thanks!

It does not appear as if the devel rpm folder is being updated with the latest alpha version rpms (ie in this case alpha13), see
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/devel/
The srpm folder has the latest release versions and the latest iso is there (alpha13).

Is this intentional or unintentional ?

I assume we can download & install the few rpms rather than the whole iso.

Thanks

This has been resolved see

& other subsequent posts, look at other posts as the topic threading does not seem to be working correctly in all cases at Sourceforge.

FYI:
I have successfully installed SME7alpha13 (/etc/e-smith-release=alpha12) on two hardware plattforms. Installation went extremly smooth in both cases.

1)
Asus 1720E2/AA4, motherboard NCCH-DL with Intel 875P Chipset, 2x3.0GHz Xeon, 1GB RAM, 3ware SATA Controller 8506-4 with 4 Disks as RAID5, NIC Intel 82254EI, NIC 3c905CX, Adapatec 2940UW SCSI

2)
Dell PowerEdge 2850, Intel E7520 Chipset, 2x3.0GHz Xeon, 3GB RAM, 2x SCSI HD 146 GB RAID1 with Perc4, Onboard Intel Gigabit NIC, QLogic QLA200 Fibrechannel HBA connected to EMC Clariion AX100
SME7 was installed on a SW-Raid1 consisting of one internal SCSI Disk and a virtual disk on the AX100.  I admit, that this in not a really useful configuration, but the fact that it works out of the box is impressive.

Although in the alpha state SME7 already looks good.  Big thank you to the devel team!

Development will go faster if the developers had one of those. Or, to put it another way, development is slower on an old Celeron. :-)

Kudos for that should go to the kernel developers and RedHat.

Could someone provide some simple instructions in the use of zsync for people relatively new to linux? I am not sure how to get it to work.  Can I install the rpm found in the download section on a Centos4 workstation?  I just downloaded the whole ISo again for version 7alpha14.  Given the increased interest generated by version 7 around the place, any saving in bandwidth resulting from using zsync will probably be appreciated.  Many thanks.  chris

I am still using rsync happily the following way:

cd into folder with the iso (called "smeserver.iso") and run
rsync -avv --progress --stats --partial rsync://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/devel/isos/smeserver.iso .

Works well for me.

Install the rpm on your alpha14 box with

then do man zsync to read about the usage.

Title: Upgrade from 6 to 7
Post by: del on May 28, 2005, 02:39:47 AM
H All,

Is it possible to upgrade from the current SME 6 to SME 7? Has anyone done this/ I am having problems even with a fresh install of SME 6 with no contribs or updates added.
I tried to upgrade to SME7 Alpha14 and got this message:
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel
I checked the bug list and found a reference to this problem (although not from 6 to 7) and followed the workaround but it was still the same. Meanwhile Alpha 15 was released so I downloaded that and started again, still the same. Any suggestions?

Regards,
Del

I did see a reference at Sourceforge (in the bugs ?)where someone tried that, I think they were succesful.

Perhaps you should post your sme 6 install problem in a new thread on these forums rather than in sme 7 development thread.

> I tried to upgrade to SME7 Alpha14 & alpha15 and got this

I just posted a fix for alpha15 at Sourceforge bugs, although it is the "same' bug as earlier reports as Charlie has explained, that recurs whenever the kernel is upgraded.
Follow the instructions CAREFULLY !

You misunderstood, I have no problem installing SME6, I meant that I had performed a fresh install of SME6 and was having a problem upgrading it to SME7

The instructions need to be modified slightly for alpha15. Don't run "lilo -v". And kernel version is different - 2.4.21-32.EL.

Hi Charlie,

This is what I am trying to do:

Boot from CDROM and type "text rescue".

Then:

chroot /mnt/sysimage
mkinit -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.EL.img 2.4.21-32.EL
mkinit -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.ELsmp.img 2.4.21-32.ELsmp

exit

Then reboot.

But after this:

mkinit -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.EL.img 2.4.21-32.EL

I now get:

mkinit command not found

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunatley it is still stopping at the same error.
This what I did:

Boot from CDROM and type "text rescue".

Then:

chroot /mnt/sysimage
mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.EL.img 2.4.21-32.EL
mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.4.21-32.ELsmp.img 2.4.21-32.ELsmp

exit

Then reboot.
I think I will download Alpha 16 and see if that is any different.

How many revisions is this away from actually becoming a beta.  I know it is like the question of "how long is a piece of string?", but I am wondering how many more Alphas are needed or required prior to considering this product a semi-stable beta.

No, it's not the server manager, it's the local network http request or something. Accessing the server manager from console works fine, and trying to get any page (including "This website is under construction" default index) does not work, unless you request it at the external address (if present  :-) )

I did manage to telnet port 80 from local network, and get a '501' unknown method, as I don't know how to do a telnet http request.

Edit: Err, sorry, that was something really weird happening on my network... but unrelated to the alpha.
The noframes page works for me now (solved it after reconnecting everything)

That works, thanks.
I have added all my usual config and it seems to work fine. However, when adding virtual domains it was a bit odd. But this might be normal.

I want to use my domain bomengids.nl. So I added bomengids.nl as virtual domain directing to ibay bomengids.
However, when I want to connect to http://www.bomengids.nl it does not connect to the site, only http://bomengids.nl works. Is that normal?

So you probably realise then that the answer is:
As many alpha releases as are needed !

So then where can I find a list of outstanding issues, that stop this from moving from an Alpha.  Or do I need to look at the bug reports and if so, where would I find them.

Thanks.

If you are tempted to use the alpha for production use (?), and don't think that any bugs you see are important or significant to you, also keep in mind that the developers are still adding (and removing) functionality. The specification is not yet final and more changes would probably be likely.
The next change they make may also break something in that alpha release, which then gets fixed in the next release and so on until there is nothing else to do (at least this time around until the next upgrade or major release).

At a wild guess, it may be some months away yet before a good beta or a hint of a final release is likely to be seen.

As Gordon said recently, patience grasshopper.

Hi,

can anyone very shortly clarify what runs from cron?

- certwatch (update ssl-certs?)
- tmpwatch?
- yum update
- makewhatis?

Is the esmith going to update itsself automatically (yum)?? I would not like that at all for stability reasons of course.

Where is clam antivirus updating itsself?? I see in /etc/clam.d clamav, but that has no code in it.

What do tmpwatch and makewhatis do?

I'll hopefully be picking up yet more old hardware on sunday so i will install 7 and see how it goes.

Is the point that I am to basically do everything and anything with it and report back?  Cause thats usually what I do with my servers anyway so it will be fun :D.

Check /etc/crontab and /etc/cron.{d,hourly,daily,weekly,monthly}

For more details for most of these, use man - man certwatch, etc.

Yes, it will, by default. There is a server-manager toggle and  matching config db value if you wish to disable this. It is much better for us to err on the side of caution by applying updates automatically. Those who want to disable automatic updates can, but this default helps to protect unmaintained systems.

freshclam is running under supervise. The clamd binaries will be updated automagically via yum.

Appears that the scsi module is not loading with Alpha 20.  It displays an error but does not allow the selection of the correct module.

Just verified that Alpha 19 load the scsi module.

Will install Alpha 19 and then upgrade.

It's best that you report any problems with sme 7.0alphas to the Sourceforge Bug tracket, see

Title: Couple of Questions
Post by: thedude on June 21, 2005, 09:52:22 AM
I'm giving Alpha20 the test and had a few questions. Anyone that knows please chime on in.

1) I noticed that the spamassassin config doesn't include the ability to add whitelists or blacklists. As knuddi's contribution did. Will that be part of the eventual config?

2) I've run a few firewall scans and even with all the various services turned off I'm still getting the following open ports: Ident (113), and URD (465). I know ident can be a pain to block.

I know about the bug tracking list, but I didn't want to post there in case I was jumping the gun.

This is a default install, no changes or mods (yet).

Other than these little things, it runs great!! Good job!

It's on ibiblio now !

For general info to download using rsync do:

Copy earlier version of iso to a folder
cd to that folder
run this command (all on one line including the dot at the end)

rsync --recursive --verbose --archive --partial --progress rsync://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/devel/isos/smeserver.iso .

For this ISO rsync is of marginal benefit "speedup is 1.04" but it is normally a lot better.

After typing install the kernel boots. All fine.

runnign anaconda the centos 4.0 system installer, please wait
traceback

kickstart error, raid partition defined without any raid members.
install exited abnormally....

Any clues?

vmware 3.2.1 is VERY old. It doesn't support newer kernels well.
Current version of VMWare WS is 5.0. It works great with SME7 alpha and other 2.6.* kernel based Linux distros.

I'de highly recommend you to upgrade VMWare.

Sound like (part of) a familiar error to me..

CentOS 4 no longer supports the BusLogic SCSI adapter.
If you wish to use scsi in VMware, install using LSI Logic instead. Although available in 4.5 (which I'm using), you can always try IDE instead if you can't find that option (by default it shows only when creating a new VM)...

Tnx Charlie for pointing this out (dev mailing list), saved me figuring out that one..

thanks. Using ide saved the day. Had to use advanced everywhere.

I am hoping to get better support for my via pci ethernet card. Under sme 6.0 kernel 2.4 I have a lot of retransmits.

lspci says: via technolgies VT6102 rhine-II (rev 51).

Anyway, now I have the problem that vmware boms out because of PAE physical address extention that seems to be on. Vmware cannto do that. Can I disable that?

hanscees: The upgrade mentioned earlier would come in handy for your current issue:
Quote from: "Forum at VMware.com"
The processor is running data execution prevention (DEP).
If you are running Windows XP SP2 it will automatically enable PAE to support DEP.

VMware Workstation 4 and higher supports PAE.
So, if you want to take advantage of DEP I would recommend upgrading to the latest version of VMware Workstation.
If not, then take a look at the boot.ini on your host OS and look for /noexecute=.
It probably looks like /noexecute=optin.
If so, try changing it to /noexecute=AlwaysOff.
This will disable PAE and support of DEP regardless of whether or not the processor is running DEP.

The answer is: no.  And I have to apologise for giving you the impression that webmail was fixed on alpha.21. The problem experienced in alpha.20 was fixed, meaning that webmail now open up in alpha.21.  However, there is now another challenge, it does not work past the login stage.  It is now the subject of bug #1226207.  Bear in mind that version 7 is still in the early stage of development, and that a quantum leap has been achieved by going from alpha.20 (centos 3) to alpha.21 (centos 4.1).  You will need to download the new Iso at some stage to be up to date with the latest development - do it with Rsync, it will save you a bit of traffic (Ray Mitchell has posted detailed information about how to do this a little further up the page, please refer). Regards. chris.

How about adding it?

Should look like:
Code: [Select]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect
(all on a single line)

I can't imagine you haven't got the first part of that; use your own, as this the most standard setup.
(I mean the stuff with (#))
Also make sure you remove the read-only attribute while editing  :hammer:

Offcourse you can change "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" to anything you like, as it's the name of the boot option.

Tony, I'm with you on this one so:

Go to any CentOS 4.1 mirror and pickup mc.  Here is a fast mirror in CA http://centos.cs.ucr.edu/centos/4.1/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/mc-4.6.1-0.8.1.i386.rpm

Upgrading from alpha21 to alpha22 yields unexpected results. Best to do a fresh install if you wish to test the many fixes implemented in this new release. It loads very fast, so not a problem really.  chris.

1) I noticed that the spamassassin config doesn't include the ability to add whitelists or blacklists. As knuddi's
contribution did. Will that be part of the eventual config?

We merged in various pieces of work when we built the e-smith-spamassassin for 7.0. We didn't pick up all of existing work - some intentionally and some by omission. The ability to set white/blacklists is available under the covers, but I'm not totally happy with the database format, so I'd rather not expose (and commit to) it yet and have conversion pain.

Anyway, I'll talk with Knuddi to see what we can do.

Be aware that whitelists are like leaving a key under the mat.

Quote from: "thedude"

2) I've run a few firewall scans and even with all the various services turned off I'm still getting the following open ports: Ident (113), and URD (465). I know ident can be a pain to block.

465 is smtps - SMTP over SSL. It's on by default, just like unencrypted SMTP. SMTP AUTH is also available there. We don't provide SMTP AUTH over port 25 as it's not secure - revealing usernames and passwords to sniffers.

We could support CRAM-MD5, but that means we also need to store an unencrypted version of the password - and we don't want to do that.

Ident isn't difficult to block, but doing so will delay some mail significantly. I'm not sure if it's still true, but there were sites which wouldn't talk SMTP with you unless you responded to ident. This is quite silly, as I can pretend to be anyone you want me to be over ident.

Yep - Alpha to Alpha upgrades are often tricky, and so we don't care about them. Getting them right would slow development significantly.

If you have an Alpha to Alpha upgrade issue, please log it. But please be prepared for it not to be fixed. That's what Alphas are for.

What matters more are 6.0->7.0Alpha, 6.0.1->7.0Alpha and 6.5->7.0Alpha. These issues need to be fixed or at least understood before we get to Beta.

P.S. Anyone feel like being "upgrade test bunny" for each of these release? I.e. install 6.x to a known state, upgrade to the latest Alpha, record results. Raise bugs where appropriate. Lather, rinse, repeat for next Alpha. Compare results between upgrades and note new or fixed bugs. This is best done under VMware - save the pre-upgrade state as a snapshot.

gordonr,
Thanks for the reply.

I didn't realize that 465 was SMTPS. I'd never run into the port before and all the searches I did only came up with URD, weird.

Are there any inclinations as to how close we are to a beta?

Usual quote: "When it's ready"

The Alpha is looking good, but we still have quite a few bugs  which need a bit of investigation in the bug list. We made a fairly radical change going from CentOS3 to CentOS4, and that needs a few Alphas to shake down.

We also haven't had enough testing of 6.0/6.0.1/6.5 upgrades - hence the call for volunteers to help there.

Yeah, I saw some pretty big changes in the RPMS just recently, so I can imagine lots of new fun bugs have popped up.

I'll have to download the latest and install a few contribs. Before I do, is a new alpha coming out??

The only reason I ask is because I downloaded A20, and an hour after i got it installed and working I saw that A21 was out with all the big changes. So, i didn't bother bug testing on A20.

No promises, but we hope to have another one later this week. However, if you use zsync or rsync on the image, you won't find it a large incremental download. You'll save your time and bandwidth and mirror bandwidth.

Damn, you guys are moving too quickly:).

I finally got a chance to sit down and have a go with Alpah 21, and now there is alpha 22.  Thats after originally downloading alpha 20...:P

Will test 22 out as a fresh install tomorrow...

EDIT:  Actually, with Planet Mirror giving me 470kb/s, looks like i'll be testing it in about 15 minutes :D.

Title: [Smeserver-developer] 7.0alpha23 is on its way to the mirror
Post by: gordonr on July 02, 2005, 12:25:58 PM
It should appear here, and other mirrors, in a few hours:

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/releases/7.0alpha/iso

There is now a Changelog in the top-level directory of the ISO. It doesn't list individual package updates, just adds and deletes.

7.0alpha22 -> 7.0alpha23

- Removed webalizer
- Added rkhunter
- Added i586 packages - openssl, kernel, glibc
- Added smeserver-yum
- Added smeserver-qpsmtpd-tnef2mime-0.0.2-0.noarch.rpm and dependencies:
        perl-Convert-TNEF-0.17-3.1.el3.rf.noarch.rpm
        perl-File-MMagic-1.21-1.noarch.rpm
        perl-IO-stringy-2.108-4.rhel3.dag.noarch.rpm
        perl-MIME-tools-5.411-2.rhel3.dag.noarch.rpm
- Added centos-release and made e-smith-release depend on it
- Removed centos-yumconf
- Imported cdrom.image into CVS

Thanks for all the testing. Please update the bug tracker if things are fixed or otherwise.

Thanks,

Gordon, Shad, Charlie, and everyone else who has contributed

Ahhh. another one:).

Oh well, good timing, my media, or download must have been faulty for A22 as it didn't install properly.

I couldn't even run linux rescue...

Will give 23 a shot when it appears.

EDIT:  btw. where can I find an overview of changes between Alpha releases?  This document doesn't mention anything about it changing from Centos 3 to 4 between A21 and A22:

SME Server 7.0alpha23 has not been fully mirrored yet to _any_ of the mirrors.

Let's see how the mirrors pick up, after the events (storm) in the region where the contribs.org server is located.

The storm might have started the issue but ibiblio (and other mirrors) were actually the cause.  They had multiple copies of rsync running that were stomping on each other.  I've fixed the issue and made the sync script a little more resilient.

I also just finished babysitting the ibiblio sync to make sure it finished and is complete with a23.  Feel free to pull it from there now.  Other mirrors that pull from ibiblio should update within a few hours.

It's (AFAIK) completely automated. It sounds obvious, but are you positive that you are typing your email address correctly in the login request? If not, you'll never get the confirmation token.

Yeh, I don't know, email address is correct.  Only thing I can think of is that I used a password that I probably used before, and it says not to use a password already in use...

I submitted again with a new password and a new email, so will have to wait and see...

first you should rename your old file smeserver-alpha24.iso to the new file smeserver-alpha25.iso.
Then you can zsync it with one of the mirrors, f.e.

The best method is to install a CentOS 4.1 development machine. However, you probably won't need the development tools, as there are RPMs for Asterisk available if you seach the net.

Please don't take this post as a veiled request for fundamental changes at a late date - it's really and genuinely a request for information!

When building servers for clients who for one reason or another don't wish to use SME, I usually use Exim as the MTA.  I've found it very flexible, stable, and easy to configure - much more so than Qmail or Postfix.  Is there any particular reason for not choosing Exim as the MTA?

Regards,

Dave

- We started with qmail before Postfix or exim existed (in stable, released versions)
- Nobody has done all of the work to convert to Postfix or exim to provide the equivalent of all of the configuration we currently have with qmail
- My personal view would be that Postfix would be my alternative MTA of choice, for various design reasons (and qpsmtpd already has a Postfix backend...)

Now, if someone felt like providing an equivalent of the entire SME Server qmail configuration for Postfix, we'd be very interested and might consider making the switch.

And David Beveridge and others have :-) We're not going to be able to get it into 7.0, but we are laying the groundwork to make it easy to choose it as an option prior to making the switch in a later release.

Hi everyone,

7.0beta1 is on its way to the mirrors. The major visible work has been in the installer, with lots of bug fixes under the covers.

For those who have been holding off, it's time to start testing 7.0 - we think you'll like it.

Please report any bugs to the bug tracker (and only there, please):
    https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=96750&atid=615772

Here's the Changelog:

7.0alpha26 -> 7.0beta1
======================
- Use anaconda upgrade detection
- Boot straight into anaconda
- Remove KickStart configuration files (no longer used)
- Hide many installer screens
- Clean up RPM dependencies and package lineage
- Removed some unused packages from CD image
- Many, many bug fixes - see the bug tracker here:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=96750&atid=615772

Many, many thanks to all of the bug reporters, contributors and testers. Special thanks to Chris Burnat, Filippo Carletti, Brian Read and Greg Swallow - please keep it up.

"Merci beaucoup" to Didier Rambeau for the French translations.

Thanks,

Charlie, Shad and Gordon

It is a misconception is that software raid is inferior.  You'll find many opinions if you search around the net, but when people take the time to test and document, they usually conclude that on today's fast CPU's, Linux software raid is just as good or better.

This is a fairly recent benchmark someone made comparing a 3ware raid card (not a cheap card) to linux software raid:
http://spamaps.org/raidtests.php
"I think in this test we've shown that the 3ware's hardware RAID5 is totally inferior to Linux 2.6.x's Software RAID5. The only advantage to using it is that when you're dual booting, it will work the same in Windows/Linux. For a server, its not even an option, as you see the dips in the concurrent numbers. It might be more fair if the 3ware could use larger chunk-sizes than 64KB."

And about cheap SATA raid cards:
http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html#fakeraid
"Most ATA RAID host adapters (except 3Ware Escalade, Adaptec 24x0, Areca, HP/Compaq, IBM ServeRAID, Intel SRC*/ICP Vortex, LSI Logic MegaRAID 150-4/150-6, and Tekram) turn out, upon examination, to not be real hardware RAID, but rather software/BIOS-dependent fakeraid. (I.e., missing hardware functionality is traditionally emulated inside idiosyncratic, undocumented, and proprietary software drivers, to hit low price points). Fakeraid is difficult to support in Linux — absent either reverse-engineering, special proprietary drivers, or (rare) manufacturer cooperation. (HighPoint, LSI Logic, Nvidia, Promise, and VIA provide proprietary drivers to support their respective fakeraids. I personally would steer clear.)"

I have installed on SME6.0.1 mkCDrec recovery utillity (http://mkcdrec.indyramp.net/project/index.html) and work great without software raid. On SME 7.0 A26 this utility don't work OK for me and I think if I disable software raid that I will solve the problem. I must find another solution.

I looked at that webpage - do you have the 0.8.7 version?  From the changelog it seems that it should work with only the latest version:

Of course, Hardware Raid implementation are software embeded in hard stuff... then software RAID and hardware RAID can have the same performance
But I think the problem is not really here.
In hardware raid, you can have a specialized processor and dedicated memory to do the job.
In software raid, the process use the central processor and RAM, to do it.

I think the interest in implementing hardware raid is to use dedicated solution to do it and let the processor and the central memory to make the job you paid for...

Of course in SME solution, it's a good idea to force the software RAID by default, but if they can buy good server with strong hardware RAID support, I think the good solution is to let the admins decide between hard/soft raid.

my 2 cents.

Anyway, I'll talk with Knuddi to see what we can do.

Knuddi's SA panel is probably one of the most popular contribs around (5100 installs to date). Any particular reason why this panel (or something similar) isn't included in the 7b1 distro?

Sure, I think if the CPU and RAM in the system was completely being utilized, then a real hardware raid card with its own cpu/ram would improve performance.  I'd still like to see benchmark results proving it.

I agree with that, but from Charlie's commments it doesn't seem easy to do.  Things seemed to have changed a bit in beta1, so it may be better to ask the question on one of the developer lists...

Something similar is included - the panel in 7.0beta1 is based on the code at the point when the package forked a few times. I meant no offence to Knuddi - I just chose one of the forks.

I also wanted to strip it back to the minimal requirements. Many of options are not required in the panel (e.g. HTTP proxy - we have one of those, Database mirror - we can use db.local.clamav.net, package updates - yum can do this, etc.). The options are still there, but hidden from view.

We also worked clamav into the 7.0 mail system, and supervised updates, etc. Pulling something into the base is a good time to give it a good run through. My plan is to merge back anything which has been left out.

If there's anything critical I've left out, please let me know via the bug tracker, and apologies.

They do have that choice. If they buy hardware RAID devices, the hardware RAID will do its job, and show only a single disk to linux. In 7.0, we will still install software RAID over that one "disk", but it will be in degraded one-disk mode, which effectively adds no workload to the main CPU.

Note that if you do have a hardware RAID controller, you should be careful about which volumes can be seen by the installer. If you have two hardware RAID volumes, they will end up also as a software RAID mirror (i.e. mirrored both in hardware and software).

The default for 7.0 is:
- one disk: single way RAID1 mirror
- two disks: two way RAID1 mirror
- 3-5 disks: RAID5
- 6 or more disks: RAID6

If you don't like this default setup, don't export the volumes until after the install. Or create a KickStart configuration file to do it some other way.

I think it will work fine with SME 7 as it is based on centos. I installed centos 4 on my SC1425 and its working fine. It detected the drives.

Hi all

Just a heads up on some hardware.

Just installed 7b2 on a Compaq DL380G1; Dual PIII 1GHZ, 1GB ECC SDRAM, Serverworks chipset, Embedded SmartArray, 3 * 9GB H/S drives as a hardware RAID5, Compaq dual NIC (Intel chipset).

SME installed without a glitch with initial install taking 8 minutes and the post install taking a minute.  On reboot the 2nd part of the post install took another minute; server-gateway mode used.

Swap file is double the installed RAM.

Boots by default using the SMP kernel.

So far it runs great.

Kudos to the dev team and all those involved in bring this to fruition, looking good people.

Thanks for the kudos Gordon but I couldn't have done it without Charlie's help, a lot of help!

Most people here don't understand how much work is involved in the development of SME.  Charlie and the rest of the dev team have a plethora of knowledge that they have chosen to share with this community.  The dev team puts up with all kinds of requests (some quite redicules) and helps people like me with very limited knowledge get involved.  I would have never figured out the problem without Charlies help.

The entire dev team has treated with me total respect even when I made mistakes and asked even the dumbest of questions.  I am not even close to being a developer but they made me feel like part of the team.

I have gained a MUCH larger appreciation for all of those that have helped with the development of SME and just want to take a moment to say:

THANKS!!!

Paul

You raised a bug, and followed it through many tests until it was resolved. You even told us what to change to make it work. What more can we ask? Thank you!

Hi guys,

Just a quick question on hardware requirements. I have tried to install SME7B1 onto a Pentium 200 - 256 MB ram but the install stalls. I can install it onto a more powerfull machine Pii350 without trouble.

I use the Pentium 200 in my IPCop DMZ as essentially a mail server and a web server. Have done this for years with SME 5.x and 6.

It may be that with the upgrade the minimum hardware requirements are just greater.

Comments anyone?

Cheers

RedHat only support Pentium III and higher for RHEL 4. But CentOs reintroduced all i686 and i586. So all pentium (and K6) should be supported. It should be the same for SME 7.0. Report it as a bug in the bugtracker (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=96750&atid=615772 ).

It must be you.  "Test Disk" alway works for me and the one time it failed, I had a bad downloaded iso.

Does the md5sum match the iso that you downloaded?
If it does, you might have something wrong with your burning software.

Not sure if this is a bug or not. I received an email telling me that my ClamAV was out of date so I tried to run yum update.

It fails with the following lines:-

Quote
Running transaction check
--> Processing Dependency: centos-release for package: e-smith-release
--> Processing Dependency: /etc/redhat-release for package: initscripts
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: /etc/redhat-release is needed by package initscripts
Error: Missing Dependency: centos-release is needed by package e-smith-release

Not sure if I am doing something wrong or whether its a bug in BETA2. Everything else I need works so well I don't want to have to move to BETA4 unless I have to.

Any thoughts anyone ?

TIA

mudra,
I don't think you're using SME7 beta for the right reasons.  It should be solely to test and report bugs to the developers so the final product can be better.  You should be using the latest beta at all times if that is the case.

the keyword being BETA.

BETA=bugs & not for production use

I'd bet they're pretty close to a stable release. Well, I can hope can't I?

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear in my original post.

I am asking whether I should make a bug report, or whether this is just "beta" software behaviour.

I never expected such a response to what was meant to be a helpful post.

I thought I was using the BETA software in the correct way by loading it onto my test box and reporting what I found. My main box is down at the moment and so I don't want to have to reinstall just now.

Still I think I will give reporting this issue a miss, and let other people running the software for the "right" reasons make the running.

There was no offense intended. From your original post it looked like you wanted to stay with beta 2 and not upgrade. That looks like you are intending this for a production server.

No offense taken. Its easy to get the wrong end of the stick. I should have taken a deep breath before I wrote anything.

Going for a beer and download the new beta whilst I am out and start testing that over the weekend.

As an aside, please don't report issues with older betas - it takes us extra time to work out whether it's still an issue as the code does change significantly between releases.

Good Evening,

Outside of all the dedication of the developers and others, which I sincerely appreciate, where did the contribs logo go in the server-manager? Is it going back to the Mitel look and/or Mitel totally? Are we making a distinction/statement here that it is a sourceforge release?

We've been concentrating on the underlying work, that's all. We need to think about splash pages, banners, etc., but we need to do it in a way that doesn't cause package forks, and retains Copyright and due notice.

I got SME7b4 running nicely on a P4 2ghz system. Everything seems to work but I have one query.

I have 2 x 200 gb drives. I understand 7.0 does automatic RAID - but how do I confirm that SME is actually using RAID1 mirroring? The install options were just install or upgrade and there was no mention of RAID. I can't see any obvious way to see this from the admin interface.

Otherwise so far, so good!

cat /proc/mdstat

BTW: If you don't have RAID1, you'll also be constantly nagged by mails to admin about a degraded RAID system. It's in the bug tracker, but we haven't fixed it yet.

Thanks! I'm a bit surprised there isn't a general server status screen on the web admin interface, with items like uptime, load, RAM, drive status (raid, capacity) and the like.

Given that SME is usually a headless server, keeping an eye on items like this via the web seems like an important feature. Wouldn't this be useful info for the type of admin SME is aimed at? Going to a command line seems to be asking a lot.

If the system isn't nagging you about RAID, it's working fine :-)

There are quite a few server status monitoring packages available as contribs here - have a search. There are lots of things which could or even should be in the web manager, and the plan is for them to be easy to install via the Software Installer/yum.

Continuing the RAID thoughts.....

I'm testing a SME7b4 box - AMD64 3200, 1gb, 2 SATA's @ 200gb, ABIT V80 with onboard raid (not used). I'm letting SME handle the mirroring automatically. However, I'm running into some problems. I don't know if this is a bug or just my lack of linux raid experience so I thought i'd start here.

Here's what I'm doing. After the installation and the mirror synch (cat /proc/mdstat to see status), I'm unplugging one of the mirrored drives to simulate failure. Then I reboot the machine, but it only comes up to a grub> prompt. I would think that it would boot into SME, or if not, what step am I missing in my testing?

Here is the mirror status:

Personalities : [raid1]
md2 : active raid1 sdb2[1] sda2[0]
      195253888 blocks [2/2] [UU]

md1 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[0]
      104320 blocks [2/2] [UU]

unused devices: <none>

Oddly enough, I get the same error, if I try to use the onboard raid. I can install SME just fine, but after the installation it only comes up to a grub> prompt.

No worries. However, please don't be afraid to raise potential bugs with the base software in the bug tracker. It may only look like a potential bug to you, but we might see something more serious.

If you raise it in the bug tracker, we can mark it as a known issue, user error, duplicate of another bug, high/low priority, etc.

If issues are raised here, we need expend development team resources to copy them to the bug tracker, and spend significant time wading through the commentary in order to find the issue. I've seen quite a lot of time spent in the boards fixing known issues.

We have limited development resources, and the best use of them is for people to raise any 7.0beta issues in the bug tracker.

And if you have more information on an existing issue, please add it to the relevant bug.

Thanks,

Gordon

That's perfect - thanks. If the bug already exists, adding a comment is best. If it doesn't exist, start a new one. If you can't find it after a search, start a new one, and we can mark it as a duplicate if need be.

Hmm...checks Status field on bug...Open...so, no :-)

Seriously, this is why we have the bug tracker - we can see the status of bugs as they move from reported to understood to fixed to released to closed.

We move bugs to the 'Fixed - awaiting release' category when we've fixed them.

On the matter of same mailadress to different domains (as mentioned in this post (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=28800.0)

Will SME 7 have support for mail@domain1 and mail@domain2 can go to different users or will it have to be fixed with a how-to / 3rd party contrib as it has to be done in SME6 ?

Currently i use a contribs from Dungog that fixes the problem form e but since it is not for free i would like to know if this will be a part of SME 7 or ifi have to pay for the contrib again when SME 7 is released (if i choose to upgrade)

Yes, it does. You just enter user@dom.ain into the pseudonyms panel and select where you want the mail to go. user and dom.ain must already have been configured as a valid user and valid domain.

I'm running 7b4 with no major issues. Spam tagging works fine but I seem to be misunderstanding the spam rejection option.

I have the following settings:

Spam filtering    Enabled
Spam sensitivity Mediumm
Custom spam tagging level 5
Custom spam rejection level 10

But I received spams with the following after setting rejection to 10. Shouldn't these be rejected at the SMTP level?

I scanned the bug database and didn't see any note of this, so it must be a bug or more likely user error?

(Loading and trying to run on SME 7.0b5)
PII 400 1HD 128meg ram

7.0 loads then stops dead after reboot at loading "haldaemon".

Thought it might be a bad burn, same thing with
second burn.

haldaemon?

electroman00,  Please check the Bug trakker at Source Forge
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=96750&atid=615772
and lodge a report (submit new) with as much detail as possible.
You can also do a search about haldaemon there, there are two bugs providing information. Regards. chris

Thanks I should have looked there.

Wish I knew what the haldaemon is/does?

Didn't find much help though.

The system boots up and halts at haldaemon, locks everything up.

looks like haldaemon service was initiated for startup
in Beta5.
Will give B4 a shot!

Hmm, it is not that I am lazy, it is that I do not understand.

Centhos says:
############################
CentOS-4

CentOS-4 is a freely distributable OS built from the source at:

ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/4/en/os/i386/SRPMS

Before building the OS, non-free packages are altered. Non-free packages would include those encumbered with a non-redistributable copyright or trademark.

CentOS-4 supports x86 (i586 and i686), x86_64 (AMD64 and Intel EMT64), ia64, ppc, alpha, s390, and s390x architectures (The ppc and alpha architectures are currently BETA). Updates are distributed via YUM repositories (i386 only updates are also available via apt).
###########################

The package I am trying to build is available as Redhat 7.

I suppose redhat 7 is not the same as redhat enterpise 4 or fedora core xxxx?

I am a bit swamped with all these different versions.
I would like to make an howto using RRDtool and collectd, but find it hard to make rpm's of it. So it would be a lot easier if I could get those rpm's somewhere. But then you need to know exactly what fits.

I have built these packages, but that is not really easy for an howto. And yes I have red the wiki howto built your own rpm's but can't really follow that.

I will try using srpms to make rpm's. Maybe that works.

hc,

here is my understanding for this (someone might know better - then please correct me):

To find rpms for SME7 (based on CentOS 4.x), you should look for rpms ideally having "rhel4" (RedHat Enterprise Linux version 4) in it's name because rpms built for this should be working right away on CentOS version 4.
Technically CentOS4 = RHEL4 (?).

Redhat 7/8/9 is all "old".

As Michael said, use RPMs for RHEL4. You'll almost certainly find any common tools on one or both of these sites:

Thanks! We are working on this in this thread on RRDtool and collectd.

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=29362.0

I found an rpm for RRdtool, but can make my own for collectd now:-)

By the way, I could use some help in hacking the cgi script involved: collection.cgi. Where is the right place here to ask for help on that? It is written in undocumented object-oriented perl.

Title: Clamav problem
Post by: fitzrik on November 14, 2005, 10:11:42 PM
Using yum updated server to beta 6
except where it started complaining that it could not update clamavdb because clamav was  not up to date(I think)

I decided to remove clamav and then reinstall. Removed dependent packages too losing my smtp server amogst other packages.

Downloaded iso and installed from that. Updated existing packages which therefore did not restore my smtp.

Installed e-smith-email(I think) which then reinstalled all missing packages. Server is again ok.

Also though, needed to change repositories from '4.1' to '4' in /etc/yum.conf again.

I have just completed an install of SME7Beta8 on a brand new Intel Server with a single 73Gb Scsi on an Adaptec 29320 card in server only mode and it went beautifully, then ran thru updates, installed phpmyadmin (x dmay), phpsysinfo (x dmay), backup2ws (x dmay) & userpanel (x dungog) with not problems at all ... have completed tests (simple ones as I'm still an inexperienced user) and I can't fault it.

Congratulations to all key players that have made this happen, keep up the good work and have a great Xmas.

SME Server 7.0 pre-release 1 is on its way to the mirrors.

We decided not to call this one RC1 as we have a few bugs we'd like to squash first (see the bug tracker).

However, if you haven't made the move to 7.0, now is the time.

Please report any issues via the bug tracker, and *only* there, please.

Thanks,

to the string does not provide any information about your server.

We appreciate your assistance in sending this information so we can

- Server manager changed to use contribs.org branding. CSS files still
  need to be updated.

- Usernames of the form first.last and first_last are now allowed.

- The maximum length of user and group names has increased from twelve to 31.

- Reconfiguration reboot added to "Shutdown and Reboot" panel
(added in Beta9). This performs a "post-upgrade" and a "reboot" and
should be used after system and yum upgrades.

- Automated conversion to RAID on upgrade feature removed.

- Bug fixes - see the bug tracker - Thanks to testers and developers

Good Evening,

Ok, I have a question here. I finally visited the sourceforge website and was struck with the impression that SME has kind of splintered. What I mean, and I don't mean to bring up a whole huge issue with it but rather to get clarification, is that it seem that SME is being developed by the sourceforge folks. After being developed, it appears that other folks are distributing it as they see fit. Does this make sense?

I thought that contribs was the sole distributor of the product? I also thought that after the final release of SME 7 came out that it would have the contribs logos on the server manager panels and the likes.

Am I missing the boat somewhere here?

Title: SourceForge and contribs.org: They're both "us"
Post by: gordonr on January 18, 2006, 05:35:45 AM

Good Evening,

Ok, I have a question here. I finally visited the sourceforge website and was struck with the impression that SME has kind of splintered. What I mean, and I don't mean to bring up a whole huge issue with it but rather to get clarification, is that it seem that SME is being developed by the sourceforge folks.

The SourceForge folks are the same folks as you'll find over here. We're making use of the best tools we have available. SourceForge provides a solid CVS repository, which allows us to track code changes. We started using the SourceForge bug tracker, but found it to be poor, so we installed Bugzilla here on contribs.org.

The first of my tasks as Development Manager is to unify the 6.0.1/6.5/7.0 streams. The second is to put in place some development tools we can all share. We've done that for 7.0.

Mitel (the Copyright holder for most of the code in the server) has also recently made a decision to use the SourceForge CVS and contribs.org Bugzilla as the central point for all "e-smith" code changes. This is a major step and means we're all working on the same stream.

The next task, after 7.0 is out, is to put time into encouraging contrib developers to check their code into the main repository so we can pull it into a future release. I've already started on that, but it won't get a lot of time until 7.0 goes final.
Quote from: "wallyrp"

After being developed, it appears that other folks are distributing it as they see fit. Does this make sense?

I thought that contribs was the sole distributor of the product?

That can never be the case. The Copyright holders (Mitel and  others, including me) have released the code under the GPL. In effect this allows anyone to do almost anything with the code, except claim it as their own. Modifications to the code must also be released for us all to share.

We'd like to encourage everyone to get behind the contribs.org release, and certainly need to remind people of their obligations under the GPL.
Quote from: "wallyrp"

I also thought that after the final release of SME 7 came out that it would have the contribs logos on the server manager panels and the likes.

Am I missing the boat somewhere here?

Have a look at 7.0pre1 and the bug tracker. We're most of the way through converting the  server-manager to contribs.org branding. But we're doing so in a way that doesn't cause a fork from the main packages, allowing Mitel and contribs.org to both release versions without requiring a fork (as was done in 6.0.1 and 6.5).

Thanks for raising this - we need to spend a bit of time to clarify that the SourceForge site is used to host various development packages and tools.

Problem: SME Banner does not display correctly on the  (7RC1) server-manager screen. This is because the MAS6000 screen uses slightly different stylesheets.

Fix:-  Correct back to SME colorways. - this is a quick and dirty. A better, release neutral, fix might use the template mechanism to generate the style sheets based upon a DB value (e.g. MAS/SME).

IMPORTANT: Pre-upgrade step for 7.0pre1 and 7.0beta releases

Before upgrading to 7.0pre3 from any of the 7.0 test releases, you must run the following command:

kudzu -q

If you do not do this prior to the upgrade, your system may not boot. If this happens, please see the workaround here:

http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698

Changelog: 7.0pre2 -> 7.0pre3
- The pre2 image wouldn't boot on some machines (bug 733)
- Bug fixes - see the bug tracker - Thanks to testers and developers. See http://bugs.contribs.org/[/i]

Title: Still Using SME 6.0
Post by: dragasoni on March 08, 2006, 09:29:52 PM
I'm interested in upgrading my server to SME 7.0 from 6.0.  Has anyone sucessfully done this yet?  I don't have a test machine to play with, only my primary server; I depend on this server for email and web, so I can't afford for it to be down.  Should I wait for the final release, or would you all think now is the time?

Thanks in advance!  :pint:

Yes, many. It is painless for an unmodified server and painless for many of the common contribs.

Now is the time. If you wait until the final release and have a problem, it will be too late to fix it.

Ok, just download the latest ISO, burn to CD, and run the upgrade, correct?  If I have a problem, I can post on Bugzilla, and the problem will be taken care of?

Thanks again for your time, I really appreciate it.

Yes, please post any issues to Bugzilla. Whether, and how quickly, it will be taken care of depends on the availability of people to look at it.

hey slow down here!!

you must at least be sure you have a full backup of the data before you do the upgrade, either a tape backup or just copy the disc contents to another disc.

If you are using the software raid function, then you could do the upgrade only on one of the hard drives, leave the other disconnected until you are sure that the data has survived the upgrade.

Of course. But that should be true of any upgrade, no matter how minor.

Could we stop using this thread and move to the 7.x category please?
