I've been looking through the documentation and cannot find away to set up email accounts as mine
is. In otherwords, firstname.lastname@domainname.org E-Smith doesn't seem to want to take the period or am I missing something here?
Can anyone enlighten me?

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the post. You are correct. The e-smith server doesn't recognize a username with a period in it as valid.
When you create a user account, that username is used for Windows login, FTP accounts, etc. so we're pretty conservative of about what is a valid username.
Sorry about that!

As Kim has pointed out, there are valid reasons for not permitting login names such as you want. However, it is possible to have email addresses such as you want, and map them to shorter login names using email aliases.
In e-smith 3.0, you would need to create the email alias files by hand.
Log in as root, then do:
echo shortname > ~alias/.qmail-firstname:lastname
There is contrib code available to enable you to manage email aliases
via the web interface - see http://e-smith.gormand.com.au/ for instance, or the contrib directory of ftp://ftp.e-smith.net/, and this feature should be included with e-smith 4.0 when it becomes available.
