Will this version of SME install on a Dell PE 1800 server with SATA controller or Ultra3 U160 SCSI controller?
Anyone confirm/deny a stock install will work?
Thanks,
ryan

If it does, it will only work in PATA compatibility mode. There's a chance that that would adversely affect future upgrades, as the disks will appear as ATA disks rather than SCSI.

Thanks for the immediate reply Charlie,
I am making a proposal for a new client and want to include an option with SME (rather than SBS 2003). Is a Dell PE 2800 with onboard Ultra3 U160 SCSI (not PERC) more likely to work with 6.0.1-01?
I have found that Knoppix will not detect SATA on a Dell, and Knoppix is using a newer kernel than SME...
Any comments welcome.
Thanks,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I have just tried to install SME (both 6.01 and 6.5RC1) on a PE SC420 with Adaptec 39320 U320 scsi controller but without luck. If that's the card you have, I won't recommend it.
There's no built-in support for this card and all my attempts to load extra drivers have failed - after spending too many hours I decided to give up and go for a good old IDE solution that always works.
SME v7 (alpha3/4) installs in wink without any hickups, but I don't want to use that in a production environment yet.
I'd be interested to hear your experiences with the SATA in PATA compatibility mode.

loek,
Thanks for the response..I appreciate it. For now, I will not offer SME as a option for a small office server for new setups...not until we have a working final edition. Actually, I have been hesitant about setting up a server based on RH7.3 for over 1 year now. Saying that, SME 6.5 will not be on my list of offerings for new office setups.
Instead of attempting to get SME to work in PATA mode, I will wait until a Centos final version is available. I am also considering switching to Centos4 and using webmin to accomplish the tasks currently performed by SME.

If you were to send me one, I figure I'd be able to come up with something that'd work. :-)
