Title: LiveCD??
Post by: KRS on April 11, 2005, 10:48:21 PM
Is it possible to do a livecd from the installation?
like copy your existing installation to a cdr and then boot from that?
like a read-only installation, so it cant be hacked?

is it possible to boot from a floppy with the settingfiles and then over to cdr? (easy updateing of server?

btw im only using the installation as a firewall/router

Firewall/Router is only bonus part of this Multifunction distro and not the strongest one. There are deducated firewall/router only distributions that boot from floppy or CD that you may check out.

Try http://m0n0.ch/wall/ if you want just a firewall/router. It should do everything you need.

I love it, it works well.

You can also try Freesco.  Boots from a floppy.  Works great.

Just a "funny thought" because I don't know what it can be used for .. But I think it should be possible to run the server part of it as well, from RAM disc.

All your datas (exept for those permanently stored on the CD) will go lost when you reboot.

Don't know what a "rambased server" can be used for, possibly for some testing purposes, but I guess it could be done.

For a while a go there were developed a "special edition" of Knoppix with the Moodle educational program on it. http://moodle.org/ This distro worked rather ok with moodle running on Apache server, PHP and Mysql from the ram disk.

One should belive that this priciple could be expanded to inklude a complete sme server.

The thought about is is somwhat "strange and funny", what about something like a "live primary domain controller".

For experiments or for educational purposes this might be usable for something.. don't know.

If someone got the time and interest for this, it would be interesting to try something like a "live server only".

Have not tried this either, but it might be usable:

I wonder if this isn't the link for the 2.4.x kernel installations. Have not tried, but according to the enclosed informations, it should be rather easy ..

http://www.linux-live.org/dl/linux-live-4.0.4.tar.gz

Think server only vould be the best choice.

If anybody tries "the live sme server", please leave a message !

Correction:

The live cd scripts seems to be here:

http://ftp.linux.cz/pub/linux/linux-live.org/Linux-Live/

Believe that up to 4.2.4 is for 2.4.x kernel.

Would be very interesing if someone made a try
