I am having trouble accessing contribs.org using my static ip, once i remove my static ip address, i can view contribs and email contribs.
so i assume maybe my ip address has been black listed or does anyone else have any ideas as to why i cannot view contribs using static ip
i have checked everything on my end. i.e, virus scanner, firewall, spam filter, router and found nothing that could be blocking contribs, because if it were blocking contribs completely, i would not be able to write this message no matter what ip address i was using.
So my assumption is that my static ip address has been black listed, unless someone else could come up with a better reason as to why my static ip cannot access contribs.
 confused

Exactly where are you removing this IP address from ?
Please tell us the details in server manager Review configuration panel.

What is the setting for DNS Server ?
> This all was working great a couple of weeks ago
So what have you changed since then ?
Why are you using Public IP's 10.x.x,xx on your local network rather than Private IP's 192.xxx,xx,xx ?

ping www.fixitcomputers.com.au time outs
ping 61.9.212.66 times out
-
my ping will time out because I can not access contribs with it, the other ip's you mentioned are telstras ip's
at this stage I still think that my ip has been black listed for some reason.
I have spent about 3 weeks trying to figure out why, called my isp and asked around then finally post questions on contribs and emailed garret @ ruffdogs & still no closer to finding a answer.
changed settings on adsl router, removed sme server & reinstalled sme serveral times & it's always the same.
The only thing left to do is change my static ip, it's pretty OBVIOUS THAT IS HAS BEEN BLACK LISTED

fixit
Are you using an Alcatel Speedtouch adsl router?
Regards
Jack
-
yes it is, why????
-
fixit,
I recognised it from your ip configuration
change the router to bridgeing mode might solve your problem.
The gateway address of 10.0.0.138 was the giveaway if you set the speedtouch to bridge mode then your external ip address provided by your ISP should appear as the gateway address and this should solve your problems.
I am assuming here that you are using PPPOE and have made no other changes to the Speedtouch router. Believe it or not despite being a static address it is usually assigned to your line dynamically by your ISP it just makes sure you get the specified address everytime you connect. So remove any static address settings you have set in the router, and set it to dhcp on WAN side and bridging mode. Set your SME to PPPoe with password, do not set the SME to dhcp or static ip, and your static address from your isp should appear on eth1, and not on your router.
The way you have it configured at the moment makes it difficult for DNS to function correctly.
Regards
Jack
ps Warning do not use this method with M$ Servers
-
thanks jack, i will give this a try & see how i go
Thanks for your respone and to Ray as well

 Any Joy?

-
Hi Jack, I have tried a few things without success.
I set SME to PPPoe with password, & I also removed the dhcp & static ip from SME
I am not familiar with setting dhcp on WAN side and bridging mode on the speedtouch 510.
if you have some knowledge of the speedtouch settings of where to change them or how to configure the speedtouch 510 I would greatly appreciate the help.
I rang telstra bigpond (my isp) if i could change my static ip, they told me that my static ip was related to my phone number, so in order to change my static ip i have to change my phone number, that's just great. LOL thats out the question then.
Thanks, Russell

Hi fixit,
As posted by Jack, you need to change your Speedtouch modem from Router mode to Bridge mode.
Details on doing this can be found from the Speedtouch manual.
http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/pdf/Manuals/510-530-516-536-546/v4/E-SIT-CTC-20030306-0003_v3.0_public.pdf
Look around page 43 onwards.
Your current setup is called double NATing (as the Speedtouch does NAT once, the the SME server NATs the connection again before reaching your LAN stations). This can lead to problems down the track.
Set SME as Server and Gateway and use PPoE login to get to your Telstra account. You do not need to tell SME that you are on a static IP address. That part is done by Telstra automatically whenever your server logs in (Telstra basically just assigns the same IP address to you by DHCP every time your login - that's how Static IP works with them and quite a number of ISPs).
BTW Ray, the following are all Private IP addresses (not just 192.168.x.x) :-
Class A: 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
(Subnet mask: 255.0.0.0)
Class B: 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
(Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0)
Class C: 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
(Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0)
Cheers.
Kelvin

Thanks Kelvin (I think I read it as 100.x.x.x rather than 10.x.x.x)
-
I recognised it from your ip configuration
change the router to bridgeing mode might solve your problem.
...
So remove any static address settings you have set in the router, and set it to dhcp on WAN side and bridging mode.
In bridging mode the router/modem won't use DHCP on the WAN side. It won't have an IP address itself; it'll just relay PPPoE between the ISP and the SME server.
-
Charlie,
My apologies you are correct.
Russell,
your isp can technically change your ip address it is most likely they have no administration process to deal with this request.
Still try the speedtouch in bridge mode and let the SME handle the PPPoE and it should work fine.
Use ifconfig to see if your static ip address appears on ppp0
Regards
Jack
-
ok i have done everything you guys have said to do, but still have the same problem, still no access to contribs.
I changed the router to bridgeing mode so sme does everything.
what can i try now.
could it possibly be that my ip has been black listed for some reason
-
First of all drop the notion that your IP has been blacklisted (ie RBL listed), if it was then that would only affect mail that othert people receive from you.
Your server configuration and router setup is the issue.
Post your current server configuration details again.
When I browse to your site I get:
While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.fixitcomputers.com.au/
The following error was encountered:
Connection Failed
The system returned:
(113) No route to host
-
Hi Ray, The reason why u can not view fixitcomputers.com.au is because I'm not using my static ip, this is so i can go to contribs or email anyone @contribs.
I will post the configuration of server in next message as i have to reconfig sme to do this, change back to static.
so if you want to try and ping, trace route or view www.fixitcomputers.com.au, now might be your chance.

Does your configuration also need a Gateway IP ?
I'm not sure if that's needed with your setup, but with bridged modem & a static IP I have one (issued by my ISP)
eg
Networking Parameters
Server Mode servergateway
Local IP address / subnet mask 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0
External IP address / subnet mask xxx.xxx.xxx.zz2/255.255.255.252
Gateway xxx.xxx.xxx.zz1
Additional local networks 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
DHCP server enabled
Beginning of DHCP address range 192.168.1.65
End of DHCP address range 192.168.1.250

Russell,
Have you tried your static ip on a desktop/laptop with no SME?
Leave the speedtouch in bridge mode create a broadband dialup connection in XP using the connection wizard, connect it directly to the ethernet port of the speed touch, Activate the connection and see what happens.
Regards,
Jackl
ps I'm not familiar with that model of speedtouch, we have mainly used speedtouch pro's... does it have an ethernet port or is it a usb model or both?
-
Jackl, I have tried just about everything, yes i have tried the bridging modem technique with xp and sme, which is what i left it on now.
I tried everything that everyone has recommened to do and still the same problem, the page just displays no error messages, no test at all just a blank page, nothing else.
I contacted my isp and gave the trace route info with static and dynamic ip info as shown below. the difference between the two is from hop 2 to 12 but they still both end up @ contribs, yet no can tell me what the problem is, yet????
If i didn't have sme as my server i wouldn't care, but since i like using sme it has become important that i can visit contribs when i need info and not have to keep removing my static ip for a visit to contribs, gets annoying afyer a while
Static IP

Which browser ?
Have you tried using different browsers ?
Have you set your browser back to default security settings and other default settings, perhaps you enabled something that is bocking contribs ?

here are a few unanswered & additional questions
1) You said "This all was working great a couple of weeks ago"
So what have you changed since then, anything ?
Not just things you think may be responsible but ANYTHING you changed.
2) You said "once i remove my static ip address, i can view contribs and email contribs",
and
"......using sme it has become important that i can visit contribs when i need info and not have to keep removing my static ip for a visit to contribs...."
Can you view other web sites in that configuration (when you cannot access contribs).
Can you use other forums and post messages ?
Are there any other sites you cannot access ?
3) You quoted a Gateway IP earlier, in the configuration that did not work.
You didn't quote a Gateway IP, in your more recent configuration that allowed external access to your site.
Does your configuration also need a Gateway IP, if so what ?
I'm not sure if it's needed with your setup (PPPOE ?), but with my bridged modem & static IP (ADSL) I have one (issued by my ISP).
4) In the sme configuration that provides external access to your site, can you ping contribs.org by URL and IP from your server command prompt and from workstations ?
-
So what have you changed since then: NOTHING
Can you view other web sites in that configuration (when you cannot access contribs). YES
Can you use other forums and post messages? YES
Are there any other sites you cannot access? NO
Got some more stats for you all to ponder on, collected from sme

Guys,
From reading all of this it seems to me that there is a problem at the Contribs end.
If Fixit is able to tracert as far onto the net as he has done, he's off the telstra network and into the US. The return route must be buggered.
IMO what's needed is a tracert from contribs.org back to his various IP's published in this thread.
My guess is that a trace to Fixit's static IP is going to come out of contribs via a different route to the trace coming in and stop after a few hops.
So, is it possible for one of the admins to ssh to contribs and have a go?
HTH
David.

Those pings from sme server command prompt seem OK.
With the sme server configured the same way, can you do the same pings from a windows workstation, what result do you get ?
eg
C:/winnt> ping contribs.org
C:\winnt> ping 207.182.33.10

Hi Ray, I had a look at TechRepublic article on Why interactive Web site features often conflict with security best practices
Yes, I understand what the article was on about and I'm sure we have all experienced that type of problem before.
OK, so if that was the situation in my case, why is it then, if I was to remove my static ip and keep the same security settings for the browser, firewall, antivirus and what ever else I can change, I can then view the website in question
If it was a browser setting or firewall setting or what ever setting, then it wouldn't matter what ip address i was using, but that is not the case here.
It's a static ip issue
I have had about 8 computers on my network, some with fresh install of xp, some with win98 and 95 with different browser setting and security, all of these computers do the same thing when viewing contribs.org with static ip, once static ip is removed, every computer on the network can view contribs.
I can deffinitely say, it's not a security issue on my end

So, my diagnosis is that there is a problem somewhere in Telstra. You need to get hold of a good engineer at Telstra who'll listen and who is interested in fixing this problem.
From the UK I arrive at 10GigabitEthernet13-0.chw-core2.Sydney.telstra.net and get correctly routed on, from the www.dnsstuff.com site I get to 10GigabitEthernet13-0.chw-core2.Sydney.telstra.net and get lost.
HTH - Good Luck!

what about nameservers
ns.interworx.com.au. 203.220.28.71
ns2.interworx.com.au. 203.220.28.72
probably around the same time I started having trouble with contribs is when i got interworx to be my nameserver.
could this be an issue
-
No. Those are the nameservers for your domain.
If you can resolve contribs.org to 207.182.33.10 then you don't have a DNS problem.
If you can tracert to 207.182.33.10 from one network but not another one then you have a routing problem.
As posted above, you need to get Telstra on the phone and get them to do tracerts and see that there is a problem. They need to sort it out at a level that you are really remote from.
I recommend that you look for a proxy server that lets you connect to Contribs and then start using your static IP - presumably you need the IP for webmail and stuff, and contribs for news and updates.
If you can persuade telstra to give you a different static IP then go for it.
I manage a site in Melbourne on 61.9.145.xxx and one in Sydney on 144.131.132.xxx that can both get to contribs.org. (I don't think it can be your hardware - but I'm using NetComm routers in bridge mode with PPPoE)

Actually, looking at this last short trace, it occurs to me that you possibly should be going out via 61.9.128.251 not 61.9.128.250 - which again is down to Telstra.
I know they're a nightmare to deal with - I came over there for a few weeks in February/early March to configure two sites to connect back to the UK and had a horrible time getting static IP addresses configured - not with the technical stuff, but with their administration. In fact, I think they have still to switch the billing for the Sydney IP from my personal credit card onto the main phone bill ... its only been 8 weeks .....

Fixit,
Has this situation improved now that the IP for contribs has become 216.17.211.37?
Although contribs is now 1 hop further away from me, it's around 30ms quicker ....
Regards,
David.

Hi David, what i have done is cancelled my static ip and will reaply for a new 1 soon, telstra, my isp, claim that it is outside there network and contribs say it's not there problems either.
I basically gave up trying, I'm waiting for a new static ip. LOL I hope that fixes the problem.
