Hi there,
For a prototype I have to build for my college project, i have to back up the SME servers content to a win2000 machine connected to the network, as a newbie to SME, im a bit unsure of how to do this.
Any ideas?
And also Openoffice has to be installed on the SME server to be able to be accessed over the network by Win 2000 machines, How exactly would I accomplish this?
Thanks in Advance!

There are many ways of backing up onto another machine, windoes or whatever. Backing-up onto the desktop is "inbuilt" into SME, check the documention and search around the site... As regard your second question, I will keep an eye on this topic, I would like to know myself.

I think this should do it:
create an ibay on sme called say, shared, map a drive letter to the ibay (on your win workstations), usually via the netlogon.bat file ie
net use G: \\server\shared
Then install Openoffice to the (mapped) drive G:, but do a network install rather than a local workstation install. All the files will be installed on the server, Read the Openoffice docs for what switches/howto do this.
Setup an icon on each workstation to access the openoffice exe file on the G: drive, also see the openoffice docs re this.

Thanks guys,
I'll give this a try and see how it goes, fingers crossed!

With regards to the backup, if i have a Windows2000 machine connected to the network solely for use as the backup PC, how exactly do I tell the SME server to backup to this PC?
Thanks

You need to share the Windows drive, then use server manager backup to desktop and select the shared location to backup to. This is OK if your resultant backup file is less than 2Gb.
If bigger, you will need to use backup2ws contrib and split the backup file into 2Gb chunks or even tape backup or some other method, search for backup.
PS. Have you read the sme manual ?
