i am trying to set up a dedicated ftp server for use on wan and my lan i honistly don't have any idea what to do i'm gonna use an older computer to run this server with a 40 gig hd
can some one plz help me and give me hints?

-start the FTP service on the box of your choice
-configure router to let FTP ports passthrough to box

iok i have no idea what to do i am reall stuck i set my box up and i can get in to it from the console but no router connection or other computers can use it i have no idea how to set it up i'm not even a business user i'm just a dude who wants to set up an ftp server for strage and for family and freinds,,,my very first encounter with linux was with ubuntu this was second pleaze for lack of better term dumb down the install and stuff so i nub like me can get the hang of it.....i'm still waiting for my linux for dummies books to come in.....any info would be welcome i can provide what ever info you need...thanx for your help

oh and the box would be on lan with router and network
-start the FTP service on the box of your choice
-configure router to let FTP ports passthrough to box

FTP uses port 21
(you can find the list of 65535 ports here)
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers
-tap into your router
-forward port 21 to your SME/ftp box
-you're finished
If you're using SME ftp, make sure you allow access to FTP on remote networks (everyone) via the server-manager.
