I have a remote web designer who likes to ssh into the machine using winscp. He has a static IP and I was experimenting with remote management settings and Local Network settings.
I am wondering short of setting up a vpn, what is the best way to set up access?
I currently use
Remote management with his IP and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255. I then turn on and off secure shell access to allow public access (entire Internet) as needed. However, i would like to step out of the loop, but I don't want to leave allow public access (entire Internet) on....or should I not loose sleep over it?
I was thinking That I could set the Local networks to his IP with a subnet of 255.255.255.255 and leave Secure shell access to Allow access only from local networks, however, that does not seem to work.
Am I misunderstanding how the local network is supposed to work? And are there other suggestions on how to do this?
Thanks in advance.

Try using public & private keys. There is a good howto here, search for it.

Paul,
take a look at /home/e-smith/networks file.
You can adjust router IP manually and then run remoteaccess-update event to activate the change.
