Hi,
I am trying to configure my server in order to take the IP from the Hub, cause I now have two dynamic IPS
this was my working config:
1 cablemodem connected to server NIC-1
2 Server NIC 2 connected to hub
3 xp machines connected to hub, taking ip from the server
it worked all fine
now this is the new situation:
1- cablemodem connected to hub
2- server connected to hub
3- one PC with XP connected to hub, working fine, getting IP from hub, online
I need the server to act just as a web server since I have dns2go there, need no email or network.
I cannot get it to see the connection, the internet test just fails no matter how I configure it, gateway, server only, etc etc.
any clues on what I'm doing wrong?
thanks a lot for your help

HEllo Indira,
The first situation was the best you could build. It was secure (the server act as a firewall). You have on the out side and on the inside a webserver. You have a DHCP server on you locale network
Now you must setup a lot off think by hand:
Most cable modems dos not accept multi IP's zo I think you must place a litele router between it.
You must also switch from Server gateway to server-only in the console login of you server.
Gif all off your Item's a IP adress whitch can talk with the server and your cabel modem.
I think you can beter build the old situation again it's working very well and safty.
But You can also read in the docmentation whith nice drawing to explain the situation.
good luck

Hey indira,
if you have a cable modem/router you should be able to set up routing at the modem. IF, you have a cable modem with out router functionality( I think this is what you have) then you need one of the following set-ups:
1) go out and by a router/switch
2) put the SME Server between the modem and hub.
After you set up option 2, you will have what you need!
This is what the SME Server was designed to do, and it does its job very well indeed, that is, Router/Gateway, DHCP, Firewall, Webserver. Enjoy!
Good luck

Hi,
I tried everything, and nothing works now.
I tried the old configuration, with the modem connected to the server and server connected to hub, and it doesn't work either.
clueless since I had that working for a bout a year and never had any trouble.
Now I'm really lost.
Should I reinstall?
THanks!

Hey indira,
just to double check the simple stuff:
1) Did you reset or initialize the modem after making these changes?
2) Are the patch cables going to the proper NIC, that is, LAN NIC going to hub, WAN NIC going to modem?
3) Did you try swapping out the network patch cords?
4) Can you ping the SME box from the LAN side?
5) When you made the original change to your network did you change the mode of the SME box? That is, did you reconfigure the SME as server only?
6) If yes to Q5, did you now reconfigure it back to server/gateway?
7) Are you getting any errors in the server message logs?
Good luck

Hi
Sorry to hijack this thread but I have the exact same problem as Inidira and wanted to ask what is the easiest way to change to "server only" mode?
Also will this disable DHCP on the server and allow it to receive an IP address from the router (via DHCP)?
