Title: External smtp server authentication problem
Post by: edhamlin on May 30, 2005, 04:01:06 AM
Help!

I am running 6.5RC1 and have attempted to setup the smtp authentication protocol in accordance with the instructions on this forum:

Quote
config setprop smtp-auth-proxy status enabled
config setprop smtp-auth-proxy Userid aaaaa
config setprop smtp-auth-proxy Passwd xxxxxxxxx
config set SMTPSmartHost smtp.your.isp
signal-event email-update

In a previous release, I was using "SMTP-auth-proxy" which still appears to be active (not sure how to turn it off - maybe shouldn't).

My ISP is Earthlink, who require authentication of outgoing email on their server. I am seeing this message in my qmail log whenever I attempt to send mail:

Quote

 delivery 34: failure: 207.69.189.201_does_not_like_recipient./Remote_host_said:_550_Please_configure_your_mail_client_to_use_authentication./Giving_up_on_207.69.189.201./

Obviously there is something wrong, and the servers are not talking to each other. Does anyone have suggestions as to where to look or what to try?

Thanks,
Ed

I futzed around some more and found that it works if I blank the entry for "Address of Internet provider's mail server" in the email setup page. Previously I had entered "smtpauth.earthlink.net". Apparently having an entry here and in the authentication setup causes a conflict. If this is documented somewhere, and I missed it, apologies for wasting everyone's time.
