Title: Question about hostnames with SME Server 6.0.1
Post by: matt001 on June 02, 2005, 12:54:13 PM
Hi Guys

I have SME Server 6.0.1 installed, is their a rpm or something that will allow me to have hostname.domain.local instead of pc-00001.domain.local
All PCs are assigned a static IP address.

Also I need instructions on how to install it and make it work.

Thanks

Matthew

No RPM needed - you just set the machines up as local in server-manager under hostnames & addresses.

Thanks for that but its not what I am after, what I want is when someone does a trace route to my pc instead of pc-00122.domain.local it to be the name of the system say server1.domain.local, and when looking up the email headers instead of it having pc-00122.recharge.local

I want it to have the name of the system say server1.domain.local

Traceroute to your PC?  How can that work when you're behind a NAT'ed firewall?

I sugest you think about what you're asking for - in effect, it breaks the whole point of having named hosts if every host on your network claims to be called the same name.

You're also using domain.local in your example, which is the convention if it's a local domain with no relevance to the wider internet - is this the case?
