Hi,
I have installed SME 6.0.01 with knuddies spam and AV contribs, everything else is as is. I have 1 PC with XP Home, 1 Laptop with XP Home and 1 PC with Win98. They all connect to the internet, I can access server-manager from all of them, the workgroup is the same on every machine. I am having 2 problems, the XP Home PC asks for a user name and password each time I try to get on to an I-Bay on the server (both user name and password are identical on the PC and SME server)and second problem the laptop (XP Home again) can't even see the server! It tells me that I don't have permission to access the network resource! The old P2 with Win 98 does everything perfect. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

The username and password it is asking for gives you permissions to the ibay you are attempting to access from XP or Win98 etc. You will have to do that the first time you access the ibay as each specific user. As for the XP box not seeing the server, there are multiple ways of accessing it. Try opening your browser and pointing to "\\yourSMEServerhere" You could try doing the same command from the run option on the startup bar.
Hope this helps!

Hi Bryan,
This what I thought, but I have logged onto the ibay and it is OK until I reboot Windows! I have even mapped the ibay files folder as a network drive and next time I booted windows it said it couldn't reconnect all network drives! Sure enough it was there in My Computer with the red X over it and when I double clicked it, I was again presented with the user name and password logon screen. I am now considering re-installing XP or maybe I should upgrade to Pro? I have only had this problem once before and all I did was delete the user on XP and then create the same user again and everything was OK. Thanks for your response.

Del,
If your computer is part of a domain then you should not need to log in but, as I suspect is your case, it is probably only setup as a member of the workgroup. I never have to log on and this is also my setup. Can this be something to do with the fact that even though my desktop is not on a domain, the username I use to log onto the desktop is the same as the user that I have setup on the SME box for myself.
Try that out and see if you still get the login prompt.

Hi Arthur,
Yes I am using a workgroup not a domain and all the passwords were the same on the PC's and SME. I have sorted it out this morning though an for those interested I created a user called user on the XP desktop then logged on as this user and deleted all the other users, next I logged into server-manager and deleted all the users. I then recreated the users on SME , logged onto XP and recreated the users and Hey, Presto everything works OK, so I then deleted the user "user" on XP, don't ask me how or why I am just happy it works! As for the laptop that didn't work but the problem was traced to a trial version of Norton Internet Security Suite, I never use it but it was preinstalled. I turned off all Norton's components and again it all worked OK. I thought "I know what I'll do" I'll turn them on one at a time until it breaks, sod's law it didn't break even with them all turned on! Anyhow I have uninstalled it now and everything is fine.
:-D
Thanks for your response.
