Title: scsi/dat 72 tape backup?
Post by: docspawn on June 13, 2005, 02:56:10 PM
Dear all, new to this sme world but just set up a sme 6.5 server with all working fine but the backups failing. I've got a adaptec 2920 scsi card and hp dat72i, should this work ?  Also need beginers help with setting up antivirus and spam filters if poss ? Thanks all D.S.

docspawn,

Are you sure you have an 2920 scsi card, as I far as I can remember these cards are scsi/scsi-2 with 50 pin connection but the hp 72i is a high density 68 pin lvd ultra scsi device. I know the dat 72i will work fine with SME using generic ultra 2 scsi cards however we never used them with Adaptec cards so can't comment on that.

Regards
Jack.

Check you log (/var/log/messages) and post what it says after you have tried to initiate a backup.

Started backup at 19.10.Its seems to tickle the tape drive then nowt.As posted its an HP dat72 and i've tried a couple of lvd SCSI card including a 2940uw and a 19160. Is it more likely to be a scsi card
problem ? I notice the tape drive just blinks no stop, if this is an clue !
Thanks for any help  D.S.

This seems to be the issue.  Flexbackup isn't seeing your tape drive.  Try this - dmesg | grep scsi - and see if that shows anything about your tape drive.  When you solve this issue, I am guessing that this will solve your backup issues.

Jackl Can you tell me what scsi card you have used the dat72i with in the past ? I cannot get any Adptec scsi card to work with the backups. On boot up the card and tape is recognised but thats as far as goes ! cheers D.S.
Title: scsi adapter / dat72
Post by: stefan on June 27, 2005, 10:20:36 PM
Hello docspawn

I use on several SME's (6.01 and 6.5) dat72 drives. For dat72 I use the Adaptec AH1540 adapter with the latest firmware (2.57 I think?!?). Maybe you can get a newer version. This combination run every day for backup about 55GB and I had never trouble.

Kind regards
Stefan

I have used MRI scsi cards with Initio Corporation 360p chipset. Try cat/proc/pci this should display information about your scsi card, if it doesn't it means the system hasn't detected it.
This will show all pci cards on your system here is an excerpt from one of mine:

Bus  1, device  11, function  0:
SCSI storage controller: Initio Corporation 360P (rev 2).
      IRQ 9.
      Master Capable.  Latency=64.
      I/O at 0x2800 [0x28ff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xf4102000 [0xf4102fff].

Hope this helps

Jack
