I am running at home - SME Server 6.0.1-01.
I am on ADSL 1500/256, Modem bridged, SME server /gateway.
I have tried to connect to my server from a XP Client using PPTP.Client is on ADSL 512/512 I can connect fine and login to the SME takes about 20 seconds.
I can map to Ibays on my SME. Now the problem, it is very very slow I have tried to open a word document that is on the SME (25kb) and it will not open.
I have also tried to run MYOB (Accounting Software)- Data on SME, client software on XP Machine will not open the data file - error say that it timed out.
Anyone got any clues? Is the ADS Speed too slow for VPN connection.
Would the connection run better if I had SME Servers at both ends?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The method of working you propose is a complete waste of time; the 256K upload speed from the server, which is all your ADSL provides, is simply not fast enough to allow direct workstation/server computing.
The solution is Windows Remote desktop. You need a workstation on the same site as the server with Windows XP-Pro loaded and setup to allow remote desktop connections; your workstation offsite requires either Windows XP or the client software download for the operating system you have. This gives you a remote view of the desktop of the in-house machine - all sever accesses are done by the local machine on the in-house wired network and no large quantities of data are fired over the ADSL; only the keystrokes and the changes to the screen are transmitted.

PS Don't waste your time with PC-Anywhere or it's clones. They are a bad joke when compared to Remote Destop.

I was having a similar problem with a server that I fixed earlier today. I ended up replacing the network cards and all is fixed. We use it to vpn into a network and log into equipment at a remote site. I ended up having to physically go there because we could vpn in, but had trouble browsing or logging into the equipment. While there, I put myself on the network and could browse perfectly. I reconfigured the server, switching which nic was wan and which was lan. It still worked great there, but when a user vpn'd in, it still did not work. I replaced the nics and everything started working perfectly again.
Just my experience. YMMV.

Thanks for your reply, I will give it a try on Monday.
Just so I have it correct,
I should connect via vpn to the sme server, login to the domain from my home pc which is running xp.(as I said in my post this all works fine)
Then I should connect to a PC on the office network that is running XP with Windows Remote desktop enabled.

My WAN NIC is an old 10 so maybe I should upgrade it to a 10/100 and give that a try as well as edform suggestion.
Thank you both for your help, have either of you tried VNC?

No, I haven't. I have thought of trying Knuddi's howto for openvpn http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/index.html?frame=http%3A//sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_30.htm
