is this possible? one is DSL the other is cable, both coming into nics. I know its possible by hand editing the routing tables, but id rather not do that.

I wouldn't try, you'll make a mess of things. Better to buy a router with 2 wan ports or build a linux router without using SME. Put an SME box behind it if you want. I've done it before with debian with basic routing requirements (downloads through ADSL on a dynamic IP, services offered on a radio WAN on static IP's), but you'll probably want to use zebra if you want dynamic routing. I'd buy a Juniper router for that job.

Hey sprillaman,
this issue has been discussed a couple of times on the forums. Try a search for "load balance" or "multi link" to see the results.
There have been a couple different *nix projects through the years to create line bonding or aggregation. I am not aware of any that worked properly with E-Smith/SME/Contribs server (anyone else?).
The simple, although not free, would be something like this Linksys Dual Wan Port router.

Good luck
Joe
EDIT: Let me add one other option here: http://www.hawkingtech.com/prodSpec.php?ProdID=219
I have had good experinces with Hawking.

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think load balancing is only useful if you have two links to the same place , rather than the situation described, which is adsl and cable. Speaking of which, I have a client with exactly that situation, so I'd be very interested to hear from anyone that's had SME work with a dual bonded dialup modem setup before. Alternatively, is there a hardware device that'll do it? At the moment, they're using XP.

I noticed this program a while ago. Not sure if it does what you're looking for.
