I am about to set up a SME to handle around 4000 users.
Has anyone else run one with this load - if so - any advice ??

I would not have this box be a mail server and the internet gateway. By 4000 users, do you mean e-mail or internet surfing. What are the specs of the machine?
Sorry for the questions, really curious about the setup.

Well - the proposal is just for email - I'll probably use a different sme as an av/as filter in front of it.
So this will be for about 3500 students and 100 teachers.
I'm going to try with a 3.6 Ghz Dell server with 300g SCSI drive and at least 1 gig of memory.

There have been some threads and a bug report about having more that 2000 users. You might want to check into it a bit further before you tackle your project.
Check this thread:

And this bug report:

Good Luck

From the looks of the other threads, you could just split the work between 2 servers, maybe 3.
I just got a shiver when thinking about thousands of students armed with windows computers. The Horror

Thanks to all who replied !!
I will split it into at least 2 servers - maybe 5 as they have 5 campuses (this was my original thought - but they are wanting cheap)
Thanks again - I'll post if and when I get the job.

Yes - this IS slightly off topic, but similar... What is the maximum practical number of virtual domains one could host with SME 6.0 or greater? Hardware is no problem - quad PIII 500, etc, etc - but what about SME handling many, many virtual domains?
