Title: copy to smaller harddisk
Post by: erland on July 19, 2005, 02:17:56 PM
Hi All !

I wish to copy a sme6.0 to a smaller harddisk. I tried this way :
1. installed a new sme6.0 oin new harddisk
2. deleted everything on hda3
3. copied from old harddisk cp -a /old3 /new3

everything looks fine but it won't start.

What am I missing ?

Regards Erland

Copying to a new hard-drive. What I did :

Backup to desktop.

Install the same version of SME (6.0) on the new HD.

Re-install the additionnal contributions

Restore backup from desktop.

You could change the size of partition(s) on your hard disk to match the smaller disk and then clone the disk. Use the utility on the free Linux System Rescue CD to change partition sizes.

Thanks for the replies.
I wish to find out if it is possible to copy the old harddisk to a newer smaller harddisk and make it work. For various reasons I can't use the backup to workstation.
Does the "cp -a /mnt/hda3/* /mnt/hdc3/" command copy everything ?
Do I need to copy the hda1 partition too ?

Hi All

I solved the problem. I used Acronis to copy the disk and then reinstalled lilo.
