Title: How do I monitor internet usage
Post by: raimond on August 11, 2005, 05:50:12 AM
I am a newbie and wish to use SME server to monitor internet usage on a small network which has exceeded its monthly quota several months running.

I need to know what is eating up bandwidth and who is doing it.  I believe that it can be done with Linux and SME server but I need help.

I have set up sme server ver 6.01which is working correctly.  The log files do not mean much to me i am afraid.

iptraf

Also the Dansguardian contrib may help you control your users web usage and stop them from accessing sites and downloading stuff they should not be.

http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rmitchell/smeserver/howto/dansguardian%20instal%20&%20configure%20HOWTO%20for%20sme%20server.htm

dungog has a commercial GUI version.

If it is just information you are looking for, go to the server panel and vue the squid access logs.  It may be a lot of reading, you can also download the data for sorting and analysis.

Thanks for the tip Ray, I  will have a look at Dansgaurdian.

Kozel, I have had  a look at the logs you mentioned and they do not make any sense to me..

Take a look at http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/Install%20ObjectPlanets%20Network%20Probe%20How%20To

I believe this may just be what you are looking for. If I'm not mistaking you can use this on a trial basis for some time and after that you need to buy it though :-(

Nevertheless you will hav a good sence on who is eating up your bandwidth doing what.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Install e-smith-sarg. It will give you breakdown of squid traffic by ip.

The problem with that Network probe is that sure it makes things look perty but it doesn't let you do anything about it.
