Title: pptp and shares
Post by: jonash on August 24, 2005, 07:44:21 PM
Hello,

I have started to use the VPN in SME. It works but I cant see the server in network neighbourhood on the XP client..
Its not a big deal, but what I cant find anywhere, is which directories are exported to XP, ie. which can be shares?

I find the user's home dir by "map network drive" to \\SME.host\<username>.

Is there any more? Ibays, etc...

thanks!

I read somewhere that the protocol used to browse the network neighbourhood is not routable. So you can't see it over the VPN.

You'll have to use net use x: \\server\share

At least I think this is the case, maybe someone could confirm.

In order to be able to browse the network, you need to set your sme server ip address as the wins server in your network config for your pptp connection.  You will also have to make sure you are in the same workgroup in order to browse.

If your are not part of the workgroup or domain you will still be able to add network drives and network places, but you will need to know the path.

Inn windows you can select Start/Run and do
\\remoteserverIP

That will display all the shares (ibays & printers)
