Post by: cosy on October 03, 2005, 03:34:35 PM
Hi All,

I did the forum search and found that because of the template system, we can't install any CPanel Alternatives.

But With new OS is that possible? if so i found this free software and look good.

I think such a web hotel management system would be a great thing to have for the right purpose.

But I think it would be very difficult to combine this with the SME server, as the SME server is not designed to be a web hotel, but something else. (A gateway server for small and medium sized enterprices pluss for private homes.)

When a distribution should work right out from the box like the sme server, it will have to be a bit specialized. And then, the more spezialized and then more safe and easy to use, the more difficult to modify.

I think you can say that you have to ends in the Linux world, where some distros comes as more or less a kit of losely collected modules while other comes a "tigtly intergrated and well working machine", just ready for the job.

I think it is wery interesting that ther is such a free system for management of web hotels. I have not seen such a free system before.

Has to be tried ..  :pint:

You might want to check out ISPConfig too

It comes with a bunch of "Perfect Setups" that includes the most common server distros. I don't think it will work with SME but if you follow a perfect setup for Fedora core 4 and add ISPConfig you will have a pretty good Webhosting setup.

Wery nice menues !! To make things easy, I wonder if such a isp system could be installed "on top" on a ClarkConnect ? (Its rather easy to disable the automated config system of the clarc connect.)

There also used to exist a "simplified" one cd server variant of the Centos distro.

Would be interesting to try ..

On this topic,

I have used Webmin for awhile with CentOS 4.2 and it was great. Then I missed SME Server with its easy config or proxy etc. Is it possible to integrate Webmin into CentOS, and configure webmin so they both don't "clash". I think Webmin would be a great addition to SME Server because it gives the admin more control over the server. I found it particularily useful when modifying FTP Access, Apache settings, Domain groups/privliges etc.

It's just a thought, but if its put in in SME 7 final, then there's more of a reason for me to use it.

Webmin also comes with a built in tool that helps you to download packages and install them, such as Dansguardian etc.

In the future will SME Server have a chain with specialty apps for School Servers - with intranet sites, more control of email, user pages etc.

Again this is just a few thoughts, but my school and myself would deeply appreciate it if it could somehow happen.
