Title: XP internet access
Post by: ceebster on October 05, 2005, 11:36:29 PM
Hi Folks

Just setup SME 6.5 acting as my firewall / email  / internet gateway etc.

I am using windows XP clients - why is it that my clients are able to access the internet even though i have not put a proxy server in IE.  Is there a way that i can force users to use my proxy?

Cheers

Chris

Sme 7.0 beta has transparent proxy, so if you configure the clients the one way or the other, the trafic will pass trough the proxy (if it is turned on.)

Im not sure if this also the case for 6.5 I think you can take a look via the program "top" or in the Squid log file to find it out if this apply for the 6.5 as well.

If it is not a transparent proxy there, I think there is then no standard way to force the clients to use the tcp 3128 client connection. Of cource it is possible to manupulate the firewall so there is only a tcp 3128 way out, but I believe that there is no "standard" or "control panel" solution for that.

Arne.

Your clients IE are probably configured to auto detect, & in that case they will be using the sme transparent proxy on port 3128 by default.

If you want more control of the specific port you can change the transparent proxy port on the sme.
IE autodetect will still automatically find the changed port.

If you want more control then you need to install Dansguardian or similar & block access to port 3128.
