Title: Am I ready for v7.0b4?
Post by: persisto on October 07, 2005, 08:56:31 PM
My try-out of SME (6.5rc) on an old spare hard disk has been conclusive: I like SME and after 6 weeks the hard disk is dead. (Home network with 4 W2K PCs)

I want to (have to!)  re-install SME with as standard functions Server-Gateway, DCHP, mail, webserver, and as extras:

-Hylafax

-An activity monitor (SME6Admin seemed OK but stopped working after I updated 6.5rc) mrtg works OK, but seems a bit simplistic and is not intergrated with Server-Manager,ntop seems nice, but untried as I did not find an install script.)

-A photo album, Yappa, and Gallery seem nice, but I ran into install problems which I did not manage to resolve. (Coppermine worked, but I prefer a “on the fly” thumbnail generation.

As a restriction I have
HOWTO's that start with "I assumed you know howto install/unpack rpm/tgz files." (that one for ntop) are not for  me, but I am comfortable with the level of  swerts-knudsen howto's "wget http://sme.swerts-nudsen.dk/downloads/Hylafax/hf_install.sh"

My hardware is a Compaq PII, 350Mhz, with a new harddisk.

I'd like to try out v7.0b4, is it compatible with what I want to/can do?

Many thanks.

I tried installing the alpha versions of sme v7 on a Dell Pentium II 350Mhz and it did not work.  Since then I have not even attempted to install newer versions on a that machine.

If you are looking for a stable environment, go with 6.0.1 as it is the most recent stable version.  Also, the contribs that you want work with 6.0.1.

I run my home network with 6.0.1 and have another box set up with v7.0b4 strictly for testing purposes.

As far as I know it should work fine with 7.0beta4. If it doesn't, please raise a bug.
