I can imagine with dual-core AMD Opteron processors it would eat through just about anything...

I would find something in 2 RU or above unless you are putting it into a computer room.  The 1RU fans are very noisy.

With that said... there occasionally some nice machines at TigerDirect.com.  They come and go... so I cannot be specific, but the 'Vision' models are nice.

One things to be concerned about.  Many servers are coming with SATA drives only.  This is a problem unless you are ready to use SME7Beta... which should handle these drives just fine.

have been using Dell Poweredge 650's and 750's for about 2 years now with SME 6.0.1 for our entire company email system and have been extremely happy with their performance.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I am still undecided so I may end up with a clone 1RU with known supported hardware. As the server will be co-location 2 hours away by plane, I need something reliable.

I ended up with a second hand Dell PowerEdge 350. P3 with IDE.
Installation went well with the exception of the second drive was not correctly detected when set to "cable select". Setting them to Master/Slave solved the problem.

Thankyou to those who offered assistance.

All solved... never trust a friend who is a MSCE  ;-)

He gave me this server as a present 'cause he thought that the cdrom drive isn't working, so I decided to use it to test sme7b8, but I couldn't succed in installing it via network... i get alway errors with anaconda...

10 minutes ago i tried burning the iso on a cdrom, put it in the drive and... tadaaaa... the installation is starting...

Probabilly the cdrom drive has some problems... the installtion is slooooooow... but it goes!!!
