Is it possible to set Jabber server on SME but with public access disabled? I mean, I would like to allow jabber to be used only by username and password created on SME server.

Use the search function to search for Jive Messenger which is a really nice Java Jabber server with web interface. It can be installed on SME easily, just search and follow the directions. The Jive Messenger's website describes how to use a POP3 server as the basis for user accounts, but I haven't experimented with that. It may be what you want, however.

Am I mistaken, or you meant LDAP support and not POP3!?

No, actually. In addition to authenticating off LDAP (which unfortunately we cannot do due to limitations with SME'S LDAP - it can be used for lookup but not authentication ) , there has been discussion on the Jive boards on other forms of authentication, including authentication off a POP server. In fact, some Jivers have managed to authenticate off gmail!
I authenticate moodle off my school's POP server, and also use it as the authentication base for pagina.
I know SME is an IMAP server, but it can act like a POP server for the two above functions. I just can't get it to work with Jive Messenger. That would really be a great contrib: an rpm that installs Jive Messenger and automatically sets up authentication off the IMAP server. Anyone?
