Title: Migrate existing SME server to new box?
Post by: kokomi on November 02, 2005, 05:30:01 AM
I have a current SME 6.5 RC1 server running on some old hardware.  It was initially setup as a test, but as anything else, has been rolled into production.
I would now like to move that installation to a more substantial box.  Are there any guides or utilties to help move this install?  Can I just make a backup, then install SME on the new box and restore?  Will that move all user, groups, i-bays, etc?

Thanks for your help.

Ken

I've had good luck using Norton Ghost to copy the drive (keep /boot and /swap the same (or adjust /swap for amount of RAM), let / expand).  Once the copy is in the new hardware, boot from the SME CD and let it do an "upgrade" install.

I will give that a shot.
Thanks,

Yes. Yes.

After the restore, you may need to run the "Configure" menu option in the console to correctly configure the ethernet hardware on the new machine - it will have been configure by the restore for the old hardware.
