Title: Have added disk, how do I use it ??
Post by: Cyruz on November 04, 2005, 01:34:20 AM
Hello.
I have now managed to add a disk to my sme server 6.0.1
It mounts automatically when I boot.

How do I now use it ?

I don't know how to make any ibays on it..

Why did you add the second disk on the first place? :-)
If you want to use it as an additional storage through the ibay, find and read how-to add the second disk document on this site. Its very detailed and provides examples.

Why am I writing this ??

Beacause not all of it works. That's why.

Still needs to know how to access the new disk..

Not sure if I can answer this, but will give it a try.

First, are you going to setup an IBAY and then have this IBAY be represented on the new Drive?
1) If so, create an IBAY as per the normal procedure.
2) Login to your server as root, using a connected PC or directly if you have a monitor, keyboard attached.
3) create a folder on your new drive with the same name as the IBAY you created.
4) go to the IBAY in the /home/e-smith/files/ibays folder and note the file permissions and groups for the IBAY.  You will need to duplicated these on the new directory you created.
5) copy all the files from your /home/e-smith/files/ibay/xxxxbay directory to the new directory on your larger drive.
6) delete the IBAY directory in the /home/e-smith/files/ibay/ directory.
7) create a link to the new directory with ln -s /mnt/NEWDRIVE /home/e-smith/files/xxxxbay

That should work, that is how I did mine.  Now your IBAY will be accessable from your network but physically reside on the new bigger hdd.

Space where? Unstalling it to the server case already free up space on the shelf. :-)

In case you want more use of it, here are some options:

1. You could mount it as a folder inside en existing ibay or as a new ibay for use from the desktops with file sharing.
2. Use it as a system folder for linux style backups or applications without seeing it from the desktops.
3. Leave it as a "case warmer" without using its capacity (not recommended) :-)
