Title: SME 6.0.1-01 Custom ISO is back and updated
Post by: cc_skavenger on November 05, 2005, 02:30:53 PM
Ok kiddies, its back. I have put together another version of the infamous Custom ISO. It has the latest tested updates already included.

As with everything else, this software is as is.

Please let me know of any issues and any other suggestions.  Use this at your own risk!   :hammer:

Here is a list of things that are installed:
awstats-sme-server
bridge-utils
devinfo-mitel-update-system
dmc-mitel-diskusage
dmc-mitel-mailrules
dmc-mitel-raidmonitor
dungog-proftpd-chroot
e-smith-dhcpmanager
e-smith-domain_mail_user
e-smith-durep
e-smith-mod_perl
e-smith-service-control
e-smith-sysmon
e-smith-userpanel
gjz-mitel-modindex
reiserfs-utils
smeserver-backup2ws
smeserver-phpsysinfo
yum

In the extras folder, I have included the following rpms:
Sarg
Front Page extensions
radius

I included links to Knuddi's website to install clamav, spamassassin (spamfilter) and Hylafax.

In the devtools folder, I have included the developer rpms.

CC,

Cool... thanks. :-D   Have you taken a look at the build process for SME7?  I did a quick look and it looks like building an ISO is very different the more modern CentOS.

Have you seen any how-to's?  I'll probably start looking more closely at this tomorrow.

I really haven't done much searching into it yet.  I am waiting till it is more stable and most contribs are ported to it.  I am sure it will be more involved.  There is sooo much more under the hood of CentOS 4 then there ever was in RH7.3.

Title: Help
Post by: dswillia on November 10, 2005, 09:40:01 PM
Marco,

Thanks for the work, made my month seeing someone was still working on this, however when i downloaded the file and burned the iso, I cannot get my machine to boot from the CD.  If I install the normal sme iso, it boots from the cd fine.  I have tried reburning and redownloading 3 times.  My machine just hangs at "Boot from CD:"  Any pointers would be appreciated

I plan to push all of the build scripts we use for SME7 up to contribs.org when I get a chance. That will provide everything required to build CentOS based ISOs, since that's what we use.

Please be aware that anything on the custom ISOs which is not in a standard 6.0/6.0.1/6.5 install has not been tested in 7.0beta development and your mileage may vary when upgrading to 7.0

Gordon,

Thanks.  I spent a couple of hours working thing out, but still have some difficulty with my own script.

Thanks for the warning on the mixing old code with BETA code.  I'm doing it for testing only at this point. 8-)

It was not meant as an update.  It does not have the correct checks in place to correctly update an existing SME 6.X install.  It is basically only SME 6.0.1-01 with the latest updates and a few contribs thrown in.  To an existing install, it is SME 6.X.  The name changes that are visible are only cosmetic.

VJ,

This is still SME 6.0.1.  That means it doesn't work with SATA and to get e1000 working you'll have to read other posts in the forum.

If you wait for SME 7.0 you can have a system that installs on just about any hardware very nicely...

But if you need 6.0.1 (stable) and you are always installing other a bunch of contribs on top of it, this is a great ISO. :hammer:

where are these links? I have downloaded and installed ok. don't see anything about these "clamav, spamassassin (spamfilter) and Hylafax. "

how about installing these also and make a complete ready to install package with all the goodies.

Thanks for your hard work.

ok, time for a little clarification.
The links are on the cd, if I remember correctly, under the extras directory.  They are basically links directly to Knuddi's how-tos on his website.
I am not sure if you understand what it takes to make the cd with all these extras.  It takes about an hour.  It takes longer to hunt down the rpms, then it does to add them to the ISO.
Clamav, Spamassassin, and Hylafax are currently installed using scripts.  It is not as easy as adding the rpms and all will work.  I believe, the last time I looked, several things are configured in the script.  Until all of this is built into a rpm, just adding it in is not going to happen.
Title: Non-Bootable SME 6 Custom
Post by: buknoy on December 31, 2005, 12:41:21 PM
Had the same problem in the installation because the burned ISO does not self-boot. I used Firefox to download and Nero Express to burn.

Sorry, I could not comment on your work because I haven't seen yet a working SME custom.

Thanks anyway for your good deeds. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Same here. Downloaded the ISO twice.  Burned it on 3 separate burners. Attempted to boot it on 3 different burners.  This ISO just will not boot.

Would love to give it a go when it's fixed.

Best regards for the New Year.

THANK YOU FOR THE HARD WORK YOU HAVE DONE.
I did find the links on the cd and all went well when added from the link site. I am always amazed at the efforts that generous people share with begining useres like myself.

CC,

Thanks SOOO much for the updated ISO!  :-D
It's excellent!  A+++
Your hard work means ALOT to us here!

BTW - we downloaded and burned the ISO to cd at 16x and it worked fine.
Maybe the faster speeds are causing a prob.
Just a guess.

Again, Thanks!!!

Title: Still can't boot this ISO
Post by: cd-card-biz on January 11, 2006, 10:14:00 PM
I really need some help here.  I have downloaded the custom ISO 3-times (to different PC's).  I have burned it a 8X on Taiyo Uden media on 3-different burners.  I have tried using Nero Express and CD BurnerXP.  I have attempted to boot it from Sony, Samsung, and Plextor CD players connected to 3-different PC's.

This ISO will not boot.  I am not new to burning ISO's and I do not have a problem booting the "stock" SME 6.01 on stated hardware.  I do not have a problem booting *any* other ISO's I have downloaded.

So, does anyone have a possible suggestion why some of you can boot it as expected and some of us can not?

I am anxious to celebrate the hard work that I'm sure went into the creation of this ISO!

Thanks!

I just used plain old IE 6 to download and used Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 to burn the cd.....if that helps....

Just Kidding ...

Nice work Marco. Even a poor ignorant soul such as myself was able to make use of this. Got it installed and it works great .....

So when you going to fix all the bugs and release your Custom ISO of SME 7 ......(j/k)

Hey guys, just a heads up here, I used to work with Marco, and he is about as die hard as they come when it comes to his work. I am glad he finds the time in his busy schedule to help us lower techies out.

Thanks Again,

Welcome to the fun Richard!  I have been waiting to see how long it would take till you joined another message board!

On a side note, anyone using this version can install the latest updates via yum.  Just enter the command:
yum update and answer yes.

I am not sure if the following commands are needed, but they are suggested:
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot

I guess I will start playing with SME 7 now that it is at "pre" status.  Hopefully, most of the best contribs have been ported to SME 7 and a SME 7 custom version can be built.
Title: ISO Won't Boot - Resolution!
Post by: cd-card-biz on January 13, 2006, 06:10:08 AM
I just wanted to report back that I am now able to boot the custom ISO install.  Apparently there is an incompabibility with the legacy motherboards I am using (theory).

Anyway, I went here: http://linux.simple.be/tools/sbm and downloaded a floppy image for Smart Boot Manager.  Booted from the floppy, selected the cdrom as the boot source - worked perfectly!

Now happily running the custom ISO and I'm nice to my wife again.

Thank you for all the work that went into the ISO creation and for the help and suggestions I've gotten here.
