Title: how long should virus scanning take?
Post by: rishi on November 14, 2005, 02:30:18 AM
Hi List,

I'm running  SME 6.0.1-01 with the pagefault.org installation of Clamav anti-virus software. My question is regarding the "Scheduled Filesystem Scanning" function, which scans my entire drive once every week. This takes over 48hrs to complete! Should it really take this long to do a virus scan!?! The server is an 800Mhz Athlon CPU, with 384Mb RAM and 220Gb of pretty fast HDD space (on 3ware card, true hardware RAID5). The HDD has about 200Gb of data on it (mostly video for editing work).

I know it is a lot of data, but this is a reasonably fast machine for SME and I would have thought the scan might only take 5 to 10 hours... Any comparable experiences?

Thanks,
 :-?

It looks inside zip files so it has to unzip them somehow, But I think it's ram dependant. I only have 500meg ram in my machine and I found mine had been scanning for over 10 hours the other day so I turned scanning off. I have a 3gig AMD with about 350gig used on the HD's. I have another twin opteron machine with 2gig of ram and it scans the 80gig of data in about 15 minutes.
