Does anyone know when it is expected that the production version of 6.5 will be

You will never get a definite answer, as it is always (and should be!) "When it's ready, it'll be released." As far as I know there are no "showstopper" bugs in 6.5 RC1. My gut feeling is that most of the development energy is being applied to the CentOS-based SME 7.

I have been wanting this as well. I think there are a few bugs that do need to be fixed before a 2nd RC, then hopefully a GA is released.
Hopefully with the elections now over we can get some good direction from the new development manager on how best to proceed with 6.5. We have been trying to get as many bugs closed as possible.

I doubt there will ever be 6.5 release as the resource from my understanding were diverted to version 7. I wouldn't hold your breathe.

Okay so what version is expected to be the next production version then ?
Plus thier has to be some sort of ballpark figure weeks, months or years ... i need to upgrade to a new version and it would be a waste for me to install then in the next week or 2 a new production version comes out.

Unless a policy that's been in place for years & years is suddenly changed (and perhaps with the new organizational structure a new policy will in fact emerge), you will never get any sort of timeline or roadmap. 6.5 has been at RC1 for at least a year now and I'm not sure with 7.0 looking so good that there will ever be a 6.5 final. 7.0 beta 8 is excellent but anyone who knows if 7.0 RC1 is next, or will be preceded by betas 9 through 42 ... isn't talking.
I am personally holding off on replacing my heavily-customized home SME server until 7.0 final, whenever that might be, unless something horrible happens to that server first (*knock wood, rub lucky rabbit's foot, sacrifice goat, etc.*). I have put 7.0b8 into production in email servers on two different LANs and it is doing a superb job protecting two Exchange servers from the big bad Internet.

Something is being drafted now to address this and should be communicated shortly.

It will never happen. Many bugs I have posted here were closed in a past couple of weeks with a note "will not fix due to impending release of v. 7.0"
