Hi all,
I am setting up a home server and have setup v6.5 on my server box. and after quite a bit of playing around, I finally have the server talking to my DSL service. All of the computers that are connecting to the server either use Win2000 or XP, I can't seem to get any of the computers to connect to the server, I have tried using DHCP (which is recommended) and have also tried setting them up manually with designated IP's. Is there some kind of configuration either in Windows or the server that I could be missing.
Thanks for any help,
Sean

Try to disable your local firewall.
I have had this problem with Zonealarm.

The test machines I have been using don't have a firewall installed as of yet. I have set up a test bench to configure everything and try to work out the bugs before I bring it online for the family.
In fact, when I restart any one of the client machines the NIC card lights up on both the server and the client, but then goes dark after Windows is done loading. I have tested each one of the NIC cards by connecting them directly to my DSL and they all work. I just can't seem to get them to talk to each other.

On your pc open a dos box and on the command line type
ipconfig
It will show you your ipnumber and the gateway.
The gateway should be the number that your server has.
try to ping that number.
On the server console try to ping www.google.com or so.
And see if you get an answer.
Is your SME installed as:
Server Only
Server and Gateway
Private Server and Gateway

I tried this through the run command, I will try in dos window.

I will try this.
!Dumb question! How do you ping from linux?
Is your SME installed as:
Server Only
Server and Gateway
Private Server and Gateway
I have it setup as Server and Gateway

to ping from Linux:
ping www.google.com
or
ping ipnumber
To stop the ping:
Ctrl+c

I have figured out why I haven't been able to connect!
I feel really stupid, but I will tell what the problem was. When I hooked up my client to the server, I forgot to make a cross-over cable for the output of the server. Made the cable last night and it took right off.
THANK YOU TO ALL THAT REPLIED TO MY POST AND MADE SUGGESTIONS!!!!

Im glad im not the only one - I felt totally stupid when I posted about a similar problem last week and it turned out that I hadn't plugged the server into the hub
Anyway, one week later and SME is great :-D Good luck, I hope you enjoy the whole experience as much as I am doing!
