I have a catch all mailbox at my ISP and would like to redistribute the mail to SME users based on the username (username@domain.com). I tried fetchmail but this drops all mail in one or multiple mailboxes, as far as I can see it does not redistribute the mail based on usernames (or am I missing something...)

Just use the standard multi-drop feature from the server-manager email option to pull all the mail from the multi drop and SME will sort it to user/group automatically. You may also choose to bounce or accept mail for users/groups that do not exist. mail that is accepted will go to the account nominated to recieve admin mail.
I have pulled and distributed mail this way for a long time on V6 and am also using iy on V7.
I am also using the fetchmail contrib to pull mail for specific users from other specific pop3 mailboxes simultaneously.
In each situation I have used this, it "just works" out of the box
