Title: hosting a website on sme server
Post by: spangler on January 23, 2006, 10:18:55 AM
Apologies if this post seems basic.

I've set up SME server v7.0 and am looking to host a web site on the server, I've registered the name and designed the website (very basic) but now I'm getting stuck, without using a dynamic dns service, I'll buy a static ip address, what else do I need - I'm thinking of dns hosts?

Thanks for any help.

I use www.mydomain.com for setting up new domains. Just create a new account at www.mydomain.com (its free) ADD your existing domain into your newly created account. At this point you need to go into the management for your newly added domain and click on the add services button down the bottom of the page, then add the "domain tools bundle" (its free also). Once you have added the domain tools bundle click on the dns management link and from there you will be able to link your domain to your static IP address. You can also setup mx records so that mail for that domain will be delivered to your sme server (tip - dont use an IP address when specifying mx records, use the domain name ie mail.yourdomain.com). One final step you need to update the name servers from whoever you purchased the domain from - to point to the name servers at mydomain.com. If you purchased the domain from mydomain.com then you don't have to worry about this last step. DNS records can take up 24 hours to propogate so don't panic if you can't reach your website straight away - give it a day or so to update. HTH

I could use more info on setting the MX record and the name servers. Do you mean that the nameservers at my registrar should be set to the "mydomain" nameservers? If so what are they? When I tried to add mail.w8kt.com I received an error that said there may be a conflict and to delete the record or disable forwarding. Any help on this?

Thanks,

Bob
